My recommendation?
Check out the free stuff.
I am getting a laptop because I am dyslexic.
Find out what would be easiest to fake, and pass the test.

Also, I had an acer laptop, It broke twice. Second time was out of warranty :(
Don't get an acer one.

well pretty much any new laptop, even for that price should play trem, although you should avoid intel integrated graphics chips if you can.

NOT DELL.

In terms of overall specification Dell are on par with any other major manufacturer for a given price, but the build quality is almost as good as that of an old Skoda. Self-cracking cases, flimsy plastics and splitting screen hinges are common to most models. Others have insufficient clearence between the keyboard and screen when the laptop is closed which causes the keycaps to indent the screen over time. On the plus side most recent models come with novelty exploding batteries. I've found most (not all!) Compaq and Sony models to be solidly built in my experience.

Well, just my £0.02. HTH!

Best I can find. It has a nice Graphic card build into it. Laptops aren't cheap though.

Oh yeah, I forgot...
Don't buy Sony / Toshiba they out-sourced their repairing-dept and you can't get any parts by yourself as they are simply not sold. You have to make use of their repair-"service" which charges you a ridiculus amount to even have a look at your laptop .)

I hate HP/Compaq with a passion myself.
I have a toshiba.. lots went wrong with it at first.. had to replace some stuff, I didn't do it through them, just did it myself.. since then its run like a charm for quite a while (5 years or so).
I wouldn't reccomend gateway.. I hear they are mainly POS...
I've heard a lot of bad things about Vios
I'd go with dell.. they tend to undersell their cheaper systems.. they end up loosing money on the cheaper systems because they expect to sucker you into buying something just a bit better.
On the fringe.. Lenovo, fujitsu, and panasonic seem to make solid notebooks.. though i'm not sure if any of them have anything cheap.

I reccomend lightweight and battery over proccessor power. You might want to chip in some extra and get a tablet if your going to take notes on it in class.. because drawing diagrams with a keyboard is hard.

*Dont need an nVidia graphics card to play Tremulous... I'm pretty sure all of the low end systems now can do tremulous pretty well... nVidia chips drive the price up past what you want to spend.

nVidea or ATI graphics are expensive.

I got my dell latitude 120L today, so far I'm very happy, its better than the old crap-pile I was using.
Seams to be sturdy etc.

Haven't tried running tremulous yet though.

For multimedia is good, anything more than that will kill it.

The bad:
Intel Celeron M 420 1.6GHz Processor
512MB DDR2 533MHz Memory
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics

The good:
7.1 Azalia High Definition Audio
DVDR Multi Burner
10/100 LAN & 54G Wireless LAN

But it's your choice, and it's going to run tremulous anyways :P

Never heard of nova tech looks fine though and its cheap.. that Celeron will suck a bit...

You can upgrade your memory later on at least. its not that hard in a laptop..

It depends if u have a intern or extern HD. If u have extern just stick the USB cable in your laptop. U need a special cabel to transfer your intern HD.

you could use a crossover cable if thay both have ethernet, or use a pen drive or CD or whatever.
