On server admin policys and procedures
« on: October 05, 2006, 08:14:24 am »
I would like to start a discussion on admin policys.  Any server ops or admins please chime in on your policys and ideas.

I feel that is the admins job to keep the game fun for all players.  This means giving warnings before kicking and muting.  Also if the team are out of ballance move thenselves before moving others.

What kind of actions deserve a kick or a ban (decon is obvious)

How do you pick your admins?  I started by asking players that I saw on the server alot if they were interested in helping.  Except for ExisitentialRisk which I just made an admin after spec'ing him.  That boy drive a mean basi!!

In a full game 16-20 players we will have 2 or more unnamedplayers, and if an unnamed starts acting up it is hard to figure out which one need the kick or mute, etc.  How do you deal with this?   Just rename them as they connect?

We had an interesting issue the other day.  Someone was spamming !time.  This does not report in the console the offending player.  I just so happened to have a putty session open to my server so a quick tail of the admin.log gave me the ID# so I just kicked them.  Is there a better way of getting the ID# of the offending player?

Any ideas you seasoned server ops have, please share.

Thanks

Im not the operator of our clan-server, but I wrote our server-rules, which are accessible under http://www.cu-clan.net/server_rules.html

I believe, this rules are enough to run a server well.

Yes, the ppl get a warning, but only if they haven't done serious sh*t already.

About the kick/ban-times: It depends on the ppl, and what they done to deserve it.

Dconning gives you normally a 3-day ban, while the number gets multiplied by a factor around 2, when you're tryin it again.  :)

Yes, there is: either /playerlist or !listplayers in console gives you all the player-names and their IDs

I don't have my own server, nor select admins. But making people admins based solely on skill is stupid. Some of the best players are tbh downright bastards towards new players already, giving them admin powers won't help that. This isn't against ExistentialRisk, never seen him play and he might be nice, but just a notice in general.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

You are correct.  I made a quick (noobish) decision to give him admin.  As it turns out though,  he makes a pretty good admin.  He does not greif the new players or overuse his powers.
I have seen a few good players that are just outright rude to the rest of thier team.

I tried this first but the !time spam was scrolling the console at a rate of 10-15 line a second and it was an unamedplayer so it was virtualy impossible to find the name of the player.

i would post the one for sst, but its meant to be private.
basically,
Racisism - 1st offence mute, 2nd offence kick, 3rd offence ban.
Evading Ban/kick - 1st offence ban 3d, 2nd offence ban 1week, 3rd offence perma ban. (helps to do a name ban with mega-evaders like leanrdo[spelling] can do this in you admin.dat file)

Two variants for this case:

1.) /condump <filename>, then go to your base-subfolder and open that file. It is pure text, so even notepad is able to handle this file.

2.) Mute-Script. Similiar to the Rename-script, paradox wanted...

Edit: in the worst-case scenario, remove the !time-rights for unregistered ppl...

Ah yes, !Time spam. We see that on sst every now and then. Since time registers no name, i have to always go to the logs/main console, and watch. I find the person, and BLAM! banned.

As for admin rules, i made a pdf a while ago, its at the infobase.

The admins job is to make sure that everybody affiliated with the server can have a proper game of Tremulous. Anyone not affiliated with the server can behave or take a hike.
