« on: October 06, 2006, 12:31:03 am »

the connection is 10mbps usually, but when i play trem i have a ping of about 40

but i get constantly "connection intturrepted", i get stuck, i freeze in mid air unable to move, but everyone moves around me and i still get shot and die

i get lag spikes lasting serveral seconds up to around 10-15 of 999, and its driving me mad

yes, your connection may average 10mb/sec, but that is an average over time, there is no way to avoid spikes like that on a network with so many users.

The only way to check is to use a prog like "mtr" that will check the latency to each single hop between you and the server...

this is driving me mad now

i have the worst connection in the history of trem. its bloody annoying, and half the time i die its because my screen is stuck with " connection interrupted", wheras in reality im still jumping around or watever

its annoying having people say " excuse" when you type "uber lag" cos ur stuck on a wall

according to my lagometer, ( which nearly always reads 999 or over 1100 during spikes), i have waaaay to much packet loss, yet i register with a ping of around 23 or 48

what the hell is wrong. i have a 10mb connection, disabled windows updates, stopped my anit virus from constantly scanning etc, even used process explorer and shut down tonnes of crap, yet its still fooked

help!

I can only guess here and assume you are using wireless lan.
If so there is bound to be a peridocally reoccuring lag when your comp checks for available networks.
I don't know where to disable this windows-feature, as I dont use windows that much :(

On a site-note, have you tried to keep a window with a constant ping to the server open while playing, so as to circumvent the package-gathering and burst-sending?

traceroute!

Try using network diagnostic tools. That for example : http://www.pingplotter.com/tutorial/InterpretGraphsGamer.html
urphy's rules of combat
8 ) Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at.
18 ) Make it too tough for the enemy to get in and you can't get out.

Run traceroute from command line and it may/may not tell you where the problem is.

Example from DOS prompt-
"tracert google.com" without the quotes.  It will tell you every hop and how long it took.  The problem is, you may have to run it 100 times to find the one time that your network peaked and was busy.  Also, so what if you find out where the problem is?  It's not like they are going to change a gateway or router somewhere so you can play Tremulous lag free.  Usually bandwidth is assured, but not latency which is what you are talking about.  I don't see any resolution to your problem especially since you don't appear to be a paying customer.

Sorry Juno, after re-reading my reply, I didn't mean to be rude by the remark about a paying customer.  It's just that your internet access is provided free by your school, so they have really no obligation other than to be sure you get your e-mail.  Where as the gamers in my area pay a fairly large amount monthly to get our broadband and when it doesn't perform we can withhold payment until it is fixed.  We also post our "tracert" results on a forum called dslreports in a section by provider.  We are lucky enough that the field techs visit the site to get first hand up to date info on what user problems there are and where.  Several times a router has been replaced or upgraded by the techs reading the forum rather than coming from Customer Service in the front office.  Some times it has been slow, but they have always responded so I have to say Cheers!!! to the Charter cable techs that insure my service.

(Sorry for the ramble.)
