gamma scale for outside scene

1.7 :: bright
1.3 :: normal
1.0 :: normal (default gamma)
0.6 :: dark


I took Atcs as the base map.
You can see everything clearly with 1.0 gamma. It is not too dark but dark.
Anything  below 0.9  is not playable
Anything between 1.0 - 1.7 looks fine but after 1.7 it becomes too bright

you can use that to adjust lightning of your map
(however it is not important; players can adjust it do their desire. but if all maps had the more or less the same gamma levels it would be easier to play. ie players wont need to type /r_gamma x.x all the time)

Note that the screenshot taken with gamma 1.0 setting clearly represents the geometry of the map So does 1.3 and 1.7
However you cannot say anything from the screenshot taken with gamma set to 0.6 (unless you use some program/hardware to brighten it) So if that was your map would you use the one with gamma 0.6 to show its geometry/textures?

No, we would not use Gamma 0.6 to show the map. A good mapper presents his map with gamma 1.0, because every map is (should be) optimized for that setting.

Other gamma levels like 1.3 stillt don't overbright, but they are for use, i.e. when the sun shines on your monitor. I have the comfort oft the right position of my windows, so I never have to complain about the sunlight

The gamma settings you play with depends on your hardware, the light in the room at the moment you re playing, the map, and your personal preference.

Hardware : On my laptop i cant play with 1.0, its just way too dark but its not the case for every PC. I started Tremulous on my laptop and when my desktop was back from repairs i tried Tremulous on it, and found, with great surprise, that i could play with it without modifying default gamma.

Light in the room : obviously when your room is dark you need less brightness

The map : some maps are darker than others

Personal preference : some people set their brightness to max because they think they will spot the lil dretches easier. As for me i find this useless and very ugly (with gamma set to max, details tends to disappear).

So, pls vcxzet, stop pretending you know the perfect gamma setting and every other player who doesnt use it is just dumb

this is not for flaming ppl I've never called someone dumb.
my point is

a) it would be great if all maps were playable with more or less the same gamma
so that you dont need to change it on the same hardware, on the same room/day light

b)whatever settings you use to play/build your map, screenshots should clearly represent the geometry of the map. they are for public and ppl must be able to see them with ANY hardware.

In DASPRID's topic, you re the only one who complains about the gamma settings of DASPRID's screenshots. That's why i tell you to drop this issue which isn t one :roll:

For correct gamma settings, download the manual from Thief 1,  Thief 2 or System Shock 2, and follow the instructions on settings you gamma. Those manuals give you the best pointers to setting your gamma correctly.
