Kicked because I wasn't polish
« on: November 04, 2006, 12:48:41 pm »
I got kicked two times today, from two different servers because I wasn't polish. The servers weren't polish.
The other players were saying something in polish, and all of a sudden, there was a kick vote against me and I got kicked
Any other people who've encountered this?

Hm... strange... very strange....

I have a bad feeling about this...
Maybe the polish are preparing to attack and overrun every single trem serverr!!!

TREMULOUS WARS!

This is just episode 1: PL-votekick phantom.

But when they decide to attack... Episode 2: Attack of the Polish!
I'll do my best to keep Fun-Zone away from being overrun by the polish.... but then they all enter and attack in Episode 3: Return of the Polish!

Then we must fight back! Episode 4: A new hope!

We shall build our secret rebel servers and then....! Episode 5: The Admins strike back!

Of course thats when we'll get the upper hand and win in the final chapter,
Episode 6: Return of the admins.

Rofl^^

When the MG Central server was more "populated" ;) there was a rather constant polish contingent overnight and into the early morning.  It wasn't uncommon for them to kick players they didn't know.  They tried to kick me one morning.  I warned them not to kick though I really don't think they spoke any english (I check logs to look for ANY instance of english from them.)  I kicked one of them when they tried to kick me again, and the behavior stopped.  I did see that they had kicked alot of people over the nights.

I don't own/pay for a server, but I feel mighty pissed off when I'm kicked from a server upon joining.  Before I join, I say hi, and ask if "anyone fancies a game"  If I get a reply simillar to "it's 2v2" I either spectate, or join another server (whether the players have anything to do with server ownership or not is beyond my knowledge, I simply respect their CURRENT game and oblige)  When this happens with non english speakers, a kick with NO (valid or not) reason, well that "grinds my gears."

Now I'm not one of those "If you don't like it, you can get out" type of racist c*nts.  But when considering that the vast majority of players use English as the "Safe-Mode" or almost guaranteed communication language, albeit, in many cases, far from perfect, spelling/gramma-wise,
[edit, punctuation]
I must point out, humiliating as it may be, the Native English speakers often bring ridicule on *us* as a whole, with poorer grammar/spelling than the *foreigner*(trying his/her best to communicate in, what is for them, a FOREIGN language)
[/edit punctuation]
I'd appreciate, even the slightest attempt to inform me of the reason I'm not welcome on the server, in something, even remotely resembling something comprehensible to us ignorant English-only speakers!

Rant over...

So when non-english players get threatened with bans / kicked from "english only" servers there's no fuss.

Double standards are petty.

i don't think anyone should be kicked just because they don't speak english (or any other language). there have been quite a few threads about people getting vote kicked for no good reason. the only solution is to play on servers with good admins (i suppose that if you are an admin, but not a good one, that works too sometimes) who won't put up with votekicks with no reason.

I am under the impression that the polish users were a majority on a random non polish reserved server and they used that majority to votekick others. Now, THAT is lame. On the other hand, they are free to create a polish only server if they want and kick anybody that doesn't speak the correct language.

BAHAHAHAHA

You are on the english language Tremulous site complaining about this?  If anyone complained on THIS forum in Polish or any of the hundreds of other languages in existence, I hate to inform you of this, the majority here WOULDN"T KNOW.  Your argument is false.  It is not a case that we would not care.

I don't go on European servers expecting everyone to speak english, or anyone for that matter. Children may, most of us don't.  I have also seen english speaking players go to extremes attempting to help players that they could not communicate with due to language barriers, to the point of not kicking cause malicious behavior couldn't be fully determined as the cause (as opposed to just being new)  The few bad apples you may see in every crowd should not determine the composition of the population.

At this point in time, English IS the unofficial world language.  It was once French, Spanish, Latin, etc.  In the future it may be Chinese, or Esperanto for all I know.  But, at the present time, it is english.  It will change.  It hasn't yet.  Deal with it.

BAHAHAHAHA... [useless banter]

Only replying because, firstly, I only know English (seemingly better than most of the people who post on this forum :-? ).  Secondly, I couldn't care less what language people use to communicate with each other as long as they aren't verbally attacking people.  Lastly, I was referring to the fact that non-english speakers are somewhat persecuted (as a quick example, this thread: http://www.tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2319&highlight=english).

And no, I'm not condemning myself and other anglophones.  That would be too self-loathing and I'm just not emo enough.

Let's clear this up (again)

a) none-English-speakers are not persecuted, as you might find out if you had checked the meaning of "to persecute"... (to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict; specifically : to cause to suffer because of belief)

b) read the thread you mentioned again, consider this time, that it's the owner of the servers that make the rules. Then think about "easy communication". You said that you know only English, guess what? There are a lot of People that know more than their mother-tongue, and do speak English passably well.
So in order to get a common denominator, language wise, we choose English.

What language are the official forums in?

(In case that sentence wasn't self-explanatory, the official forums are in English, so that would suggest that English is the official language of the game [other languages are welcome though].)

Kicking based on not speaking a certain language = lame.

Let's clear this up (again)

a) none-English-speakers...

Completely off topic:  Don't criticize my usage by starting the sentence with gibberish.  I said
Quote from: "pyrax"
somewhat

persecuted.  To be fair, I should have included quotation marks around "persecuted" to be crystal clear. (Also, another definition of persecute is "to harass or annoy [someone] persistently")

Also, I'm not telling people how to run their servers for which they've paid money and/or time to set up.  What I'm doing is voicing my opinion that kicking someone off a server for talking to someone else in an "unsanctified" language is lame.  I don't see the reason why everyone has to know what everyone else is saying all the time.  I've used the public channel to talk to a specific person before and it didn't require the rest of the server to pay attention (using /m <name> is just tedious).  And, as I said before, as long as there aren't any personal attacks or harassment then it doesn't matter to me how people choose to communicate.

Its not the unofficial language of the world.
Its the unofficial language of the internet.
But for our intents and purposes, it doesn't make that much of a difference, as the internet is our world.
