Just a few little ideas I had:

Human builders can change direction of Turrets while they arn't shooting (you walk up to turret press q and it looks in the same direction you are or something like that).
When you build make it so you can move the building closer or further away from you because sometimes its annoying not being able to build something because its too far in front.
Make icons that arn't able to be activated unselectable but still seen on the hud somewhere so that I dont have to scroll through them.

I agree that the inventory icons need attention so that only useable items can be selected, but the turret idea will do little more than adding a whole new dimension to the human sport of turret-camping. Being able to move the buildings will probably open a massive can of bugs where "building in the cage" and the various clipmodel/drawmodel glitches happen in every game.

Also, what to the aliens get to compensate for these human advantages?

I guess if you could move the blueprints closer or away it would cause gliches, but it would still be cool if it was done somehow.

No idea, though I was just thinking about being able to build spawns that are less likely to spawn players, like being able to build a backup spawn out in the middle of no where that doesn't spawn unless the other eggs are gone, to stop spawn killing and to not be stuck far away from anything.
