Ping and Server List problems
« on: November 15, 2006, 10:16:27 am »
When I first got my new broadband connection (god bless broadband: its the only true internet), I was able to access the Gamearena Servers and the GU (gaming underground) server with almost no lag.  FPS was averaging about 70-90.  However, GU has now disappeared from my list (I had it in my favourites, now it is displayed as a ping address), and I am constantly recieving rediculously high amounts of ping on my computer, to the point where I am killed by people who I can't even see.  SPAWNING is lagged.  Same for spectating.

I have unlimited, so it shouldn't have anything to do with my download limits or anything.

Does anyone, ANYONE have the slightest idea what's going on?  Its been an ongoing problem, and its just getting worse and worse.  Please help.

Get spy-ware, ad-ware, and virus checkers. Then use them.
Also make sure the video drivers are up to date.

Also, tell other people who share your connection to stop using bit torrent.
If they wont, get a better router and set up some QoS.

I've checked my computer for every variant of virus 100,000 times, no problem there.  I suspect the router itself is the actual problem, owing to the fact that it often refuses to connect to the internet, but this gets solved by turning the router off and then on again.  However, this is only a temporary fix for the problem.  And, as previously mentioned, the problem is getting steadily worse.

And what's a QoS?  Never heard that term before (well, I probably have, just not abbreviated like that)  :P

Quality of Service.
So some packets get priority, and others don't.
What router do you have?
Get the latest firmware.

Fix bugs and such.
Are you on wireless?
If so change the channel, see if you get a better signal.

open console, does it say "96 filtered for ping" or something like that? also try to flip "show empty" and "show full"

It says: 98 servers not listed due to packet loss or ip higher than 800.

yes, your wireless link is CRAP and is losing packets
you can try bigger antenna/better wireless card/repeater, but the simplest solution is to change providers

You have a wireless provider, or you have a wireless router?  If you have a wireless router and it is bad, changing ISPs will not fix anything.

You ask what can be done, but without a tracert, we can't see where the problem is.

Rasz - How can you tell it is his wireless link and not a bad router upstream somewhere?

I have worked with WISPs for few years. Its extremly rare (at least in Europe) for an ISP to lose packets like that, its quite normal for wireless links. Ppl dont even notice it until they want to run something over UDP.
But yes, he might have a normal ISP, wifi router and a computer connected over wifi to that router.

there is no such animal, almost every single AP has a MAX allowed power output (FCC / CE wise).

so what about it? it outputs MAX alowed in a region it is sold (radio out + antenna gain). Overdriving it is a bad idea because you add more amplifier noise than actual signal. If you really must extend the range buy/make a proper antenna.
