While you may not like playing on sst, others do, and may not like playing on your server.
All in all, please donate and help out a member of the community.
I suspect a large portion of the flaming you complain about can be sourced to a misunderstanding as to what you meant by the above quote, which I myself had to look at twice. Taken in context of the whole, it can be read to imply that an individual should donate because there are those who do not like playing on that individuals server. I do not think that this was intended. In fact, I think that what was intended was to try to help avoid the kinds of reactions you are getting.
To some degree, I do not feel the reactions are entirely unfair though. This site does request donations on the front page so you are bound to catch some heat from it's members in asking for your own donations on their forum. You have also spoken very directly to the fact that concerns, comments, and/or complaints about SST should be taken to the SST forums. That people here who have seen this would expect you to do the same with a request for donations is not unrealistic or an unreasonable request, though I would not make it.
It does not help that confess spoke with such a condescending tone.

Take me for instance, I operate a server, and help with others. Additionally, I have donated to tremulous and others in teh community and I intend to continue. Modest amounts I admit, but I do believe in supporting good communities where I can, and I think we all should. After all, noone playing tremulous is going hungry. The only reason I have a server running is because enormous amounts of time has been expended by many people to build what was needed to create the game itself. Reading about what an ungrateful bastard of a fool that I and others are is disconcerting at best, particularly when some of the people confess seems to be referring to are recommending donations to the developers of the server you are running.
With 30 people presently playing on sst, the #mercenariesguild irc bot reports:

Ultimately, we should all contribute. If you play a great deal on a server, donate to them. Even $1 if possible, it all adds up. If everyone who played on sst donated $2 the monthly costs would be covered in week one! And what's $2 a month?! We shouldn't stop there though, the tremulous dev's have devoted enormous amounts of time building, fixing, tuning, you name it. We may not be able to pay an hourly wage to them, but we can certainly help buy a new computer, or even a nice dinner! All through $1 and $2 dollar donations! They have all helped you to have a LOT of FUN! Help them to do the same
