Who killed the talk balloon and why?
« on: December 08, 2006, 06:10:13 pm »
A talk balloon has been suggested to me for Balance Mod, however this is an old Quake feature and apparently has been in the Tremulous code already! Could someone who played back when this feature was still active explain why it was removed?

Also, a chat-balloon is only a sign that says: Free Kill!

Can we actually get some "Free kill" balloons and other things... this could be a whole new way for admins to use their power by labeling players with annoying little balloons!

Make the talk balloon team only?
Would make the "Where are you? Oh, you're right there" easier.

You are thinking waypoints.. i think this is more like a thing to let you see someone is typing.. which having it be team only would defeat the purpose..

Actually the talk balloon is for the other team. It is saying "free kill" but you would have gotten a free kill anyway. It allows people who dont type-kill to know who is typing and who isnt.

Also whoever coded it before (TA?) didnt write it correctly. Before you could see the damn thing through walls, but I fixed that.

I'm against. Being free to stop in the middle of the alien base to say to your team that the OM is down.... No thanks

I misinterpreted the topic.
But it would be a nice addition.
The only thing that keeps them from killing you is their respect and decency.
If you kill the OM and then stop in the middle of the enemy base to type, who is going to respect you?

If the Humans just wacked the Alien base, they should all activate messagemode at the same time and you gut a Human team with balloons! So sweet!

I would like this as long as it is invisible to the other team.  So aliens don't have to wear an EAT AT JOES sign over their head.

that defeats the whole purpose...if ur sitting still typing, ur sitting still typing. theyll kill you if they want to, whether or not you have a balloon. On the other hand, me not wanting to kill typers, and being rather slow at the same time, would like a balloon so i know when to shootinate.

If you go around a corner and see a guy with a talk/console balloon, you now have the option to turn around or pass him by.

I remember you telling me about that. Tremulous didnt and doesnt have that sort of thing. Balance Mod rev. 9 now pops up a chat balloon though (see the screenshots).

Fun.

On AW this will not be implented .)
There are to many player that dont honor that baloon, and why should they?
The ppl talking are only typing and can still see what's going on around them.

You walk by someone typing, let him live, he is finished typing and shoots you in the back. Thanks, but no thanks.

don't chat out of your base.
I only don't kill people who are chatting if I know them, and know that wont just kill me for it.

Impressive David, you are saying that you know of people that dont shoot you in the back after you run by them when they were chatting?

More power to you then. I know of no one that would do that, after all the aim of the game is to win. And chatting in vulnerable positions is just plain stupid .)

I do typekill on occasion, because aliens recover stamina while they are typing, so to let them sit still untouched gives them the advantage when they are done typing. Also, everytime I ever simply walk by someone who I thought was typing, they end up repaying me by pouncing me from behind. Would be kinda nifty if aliens stopped recovering stamina while the chat indicator was up. 8)
