Little help?
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:13:50 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to mapping, and I have a few questions that may seem noobish.  All I want to be able to do is make a textured start-up room.  Everything else I can figure out later.

Now, the making the room part is fine, I can even add human and alien spawns/buildings/etc...

I've read many tutorials, and I found one that was supposed to tell me how to apply textures.  I read it, and fiddled with it.  I must have worked with it for about 15 minutes until I realized that I must be doing something wrong.

The tutorial said to press the left-CTRL and the left-SHIFT and select a wall.  Now I had already created a hollow brush that was my room and I couldn't figure out how to select it again.  It said that the wall would turn red on the outline, but I have yet to get a red outline.  Sorry if this is a waste of forum space.  I really tried to figure it out myself, but I just need a little bit of a push in the right way to get going.

I'm not new to tremulous.  I think I've played for about 3 months now and I'm fairly decent at it.  I've got some great map ideas, I just have no way to make them come to life...

Anyways, a little help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

the ctrl-shift click refers to the 3d camera view. Move the camera until you can see the texture you want to change, and ctrl-shift click it in camera view to select a single surface. the whole face will get tinted red. Press 's' once you have the wall selected for more properties, or try the arrow keys with ctrl or shift held if you just want to move the texture around.

You can also drag textures directly from the texture window to the 3d view.

Ok.

This seems simple enough.  By the way, I'm on another computer and don't have access to gtk, but I have another question.

If I do not make a brush hollow, will it be an unplayable area in the game?  I have a feeling that thats the way it will be.

And, do you know of any navigation guide, or any guide to all the tools in gtk?  I would like to learn exactly what everything does, instead of expirementing and hoping that I get things correct.

And my final question is how you see the wall in a hollowed room to add the texture to.  I think I did try in the 3d view when I was fiddling around, but couldn't do anything because I didn't even see a wall anywhere.

Thank you for helping me get started.

Read this => http://tremmapping.pbwiki.com/Starting%20Tremulous%20Mapping

It is a reasonable introduction to most aspects of tremmapping although the author is a total ass. We just don't like answering questions which have already been answered in full :)
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

Might I add this;

It's better to do all your brushwork by hand, than to let Radiant do the hollowing, carving and what not. This way you keep full control over your work, instead of trusting it to some buggy application ;)

@ Survivor,

Thank you for that tutorial!  It was the one I suppose I missed because it answered most of my questions!

@ KnightBear,

Thank you for your input, but I've got navigation down.  I need to work on applying my ideas now.

@ Lava,

That is a very good tip.  So, to make a room, you would interconnect brushes?  Oo.  I was misunderstanding...  I thought you had to take a brush, then hollow it out, then that was your room.  Thank you!  That helps a lot!

I'm well on my way to learning now.  Anybody else who has any good start-up tips, I would love to hear them.

If not, Mods/Admins, feel free to close/delete this thread.  I've got what I need.

Thank you!
