tremulous totally gpl?
« on: January 07, 2007, 07:00:50 pm »
hello,

first of all, congratulations on tremulous. fantastic game.

i've got a question about the license. i've read that tremulous is a gpl game, does that apply to media like maps, models and sounds? or is it only the engine that is gpl?

thanks.

only the engine of tremulous is gpl'ed. most of the media is under a creative commons license (i'm too lazy to look up which one, just read COPYING or whatever its called)

i was hoping some of the maps might be gpl too.

i play a lot of openarena http://openarena.ws/. it's good, but it's mainly small deatmatch type maps. i'd love to play it on some of tremulous's bigger, more strategic maps, but the only problem is that if tremulous maps are creative commons then they couldn't be included in openarena because cc is incompatible with the gpl license.

do you know where i could find a contact list for the map makers? i'd like to contact them and ask if they'd consider licensing their maps under the gpl as well as the cc license.

thanks for your help.

I guess there is someone that does not get the difference between the game itself and the media/maps used...

WHB, please take a hike...

i get the difference between the game engine and the media, but the tremulous project seems a bit hazy on that count. it advertises itself as a gpl game when really it's only the game engine that's gpl.

might be worth making that distinction a bit clearer.

what exactly is wrong with the license tremulous uses for its media?

It doesn't sound like he has a problem with the licenses per se (correct me if I'm wrong), but rather that the fact that the game code and the media are released under different licenses is not immediately obvious. After all the two licenses are essentially specific to the types of content they are applied to (GPL code, CC media) and since there are probably many contradictions between them should somebody assume that the media is GPL or vice versa, it's probably wise to clearly state that the game media is released under a CC license to avoid confusion.

Actually most of the games announced as GPL have the same partial licensing as Trem does. No one should be surprised about this. The unusual cases are OpenArena/Nexuiz.
Anyway, I don't get the GPL fanboysm (sp?). I will never decide to play a game because it's under a given license, but because I enjoy its gameplay. It being GPL doesn't make it any better or worse to my eyes.

Because the GPL rocks man, don't you know, if it's not GPL it's not really free. The whole forcing all derivatives to be under the same license, that's what I call freedom man! Especially since you know it was made for source code but, the models and maps NEED to be under the GPL man, I mean it's not like CC was made specifically for such purposes like licensing media or anything.

I'm not sure how much more obvious the license can be made to be honest. In addition to the clearly stated terms in COPYING, you are forced to at least glance at the license while installing Trem. In fact in the Windows case this is the very first thing you are shown:

Like Timbo said, the licensing of Tremulous is perfectly clear and well described for both code and content.

The major complain of FSF, GNU people and BSD people about Creative Commons license is their lack of precision on certain details, and the usage of the generic expression "CC license".

Never say something is under a "CC license", because CC include a dozen of licenses with very different levels of freedom.

Most of the Tremulous content is not under "a CC license" but under the  CC-BY-SA license. And this is the CC license that is most similar to the GPL.

The licensing of Tremulous content is an incredible gift to the community of game developers. Games with this level of quality and freedom could counted on the fingers of one hand !

Seconded, but some people will never be satisfied, I guess.
