I've played many games that cost more, and become boring after being played once.

Developing a game like trem is non-trivial and time consuming, and without the pay packet of a commercial developer. I think that a donation is a good way of showing that you appreciate the effort put into making the game.

Does a contribution of code or media count as a donation? I guess monetary donations are good for those without the resources to contribute the former...

Implement the flying superdretch with 1000hp and laser cannons and I'll donate $50,000

Yep, there're 3 missing options:
- Only code/maps/other media
- Code/maps/other media and small donations
- Code/maps/other media and large donations
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

Im too tight to donate. Sure I have a lot of cash, but I learnt it the good old fashioned way.
I see little reason why someone should get my cash just for leting me play on the server.

I may come across as a tight wad, but that is just the way I view things.

Not donating to a server that you play on is no big deal IMO.  However, the amount of work that it takes to set up and run a single server pales in comparision to the overall amount of work that went (and continues to go) into building the actual tremulous software.  Not to mention ioq3 and the continuing work there.

If you load up the game and try it out a few times, never to run it again then why bother donating.  But if you find it is a lot of fun, and you play it often and regularly, maybe you could unclench a few bucks from the fistful of cash and throw it to the people who have been entertaining you and continue to do so :)

I've made a small donation, and this reminds me that it's time to do so again.

You sir are pitiful and need to review your priorities in life.  If you have the cash that you say you do, what good is it if you do not use it for the things you enjoy in life.

There are servers I have gamed on that I enjoyed and have gone out of my way to find, contact and offer donations to that server to show support.  Comparatively, Tremulous itself makes it easy to donate with just a few mouse clicks.  And there is also much to be said for those that donate time, effort and resources.

But to those that can donate and don't... (Shaking head sadly)  Pitiful.

Perhaps because donating will not actually increase his enjoyment. So he has no incentive to.

I have not donated, because of that reason. Sure im a tight wad, but so are most people here.

It does not increase my enjoyment but does show my appreciation for the time and effort that someone took to develope something I enjoy.  In turn, it may foster further developement or others to try this project model in the future.

Just because you are a "tight wad" should not make you believe that most people are also and in turn help you justify your selfish behavior.

@edit - 1/18/07 1:00 PM CST - 93% of those responding say they have donated, are considering donating, or would like to donate but cannot.  Only 6% think like you do and see no reason to donate.  I think you should try to change your perception of others and not convince yourself they are like you.

Again, let me reiterate - "But to those that can donate and don't..."  There are many that cannot due to their situation but, people have contributed in many ways to Tremulous besides just cash.

Ok-
put it this way.

Tremulous is a free game.
I see no reason why it shouldnt stay that way.

Its nice that people go to the effort of setting up expensive servers, but in the kindest way possible, its their problem, not mine.

Instead of donating £40, I could buy myself another game.
Or, I could put that towards my soon to be Mac Pro.

Unless there is a server which is really fantastic,
I shall continue to hold this view.
And I mean fantastic as in "Uber l33t pwnage", not just "Good".

Newsflash!  Tremulous is NOT free.  If your concept of free translates ONLY to you giving money to use the software then you are very probably a narcissist.  You are entertaining yourself using other peoples resources.  Those resources are time, knowledge, bandwidth, hardware, etc.

Tremulous will stay as it is in terms of cost due to the OSS license.  Ironically, server admins could charge to use their servers at some time in the future.  Unlikely, but not impossible.

I strongly suspect that if such a server did exist, you would find something wrong with it to justify being a leech instead of contributing to the whole.

Mind you, being a leech is normal.  We all are at times.  But for you to practically brag about it is...Hell, I don't know what it is.  Not good in my opinion.  If you are using the product of someones hard work maybe it wouldn't kill you to show your appreciation, I'm not talking about the servers.  Have you donated to the developers?

OK so this beer is free, and I am not going to pay for any I drink. No matter how it is going to be served, in a dog-bowl, splattered on the ground or in a decent glas. I will not pay

Let's just say that You noob will never be invited to any party, unless the crappiest beer will be served to free loaders.

And then again, I now know whom to kick when we need another slot freed for another, more understanding regular :)

Haha...this is fun..im making enemies by the minute.

My apologies, but as far as im concerned, Tremulous is free. TO ME.
It cost a lot of £££ probably to develop, but to me its free. I did not pay to aquire it, so as such, its free to ME.

I have NOT donated to the developers.
I do appreciate their effort in creating one of the best open source games (I really do), but I do not feel a need to donate.
They did not intend for Tremulous to be a game you pay for, and as such I refuse to be pressured into doing so.

I have no idea why you decide to pull the word 'Narcissist'.
Im not entertaining myself at others expenses.
Quite the opposite.
The developers are entertaining me at their expense.
Once again, THEY chose to charge nothing for this game.
I didnt, they did.

If server admins do start charging, then I will be on my way out of here (Im sure I wont be the only one either).
There will be no sense in playing it then.
I can play things like Battlefield 2 or Company of Heroes for no cost.
Why should I pay for something that (My apologies. This will sound rude. No other way to put it though) is inferior when I can get something better for free ?

And woohoo, SCORE.
One of the admins from my favourite servers has a personal vendetta against me.

Come on,
can no one see my logic here ?!
Someone build be a booster here !

Software developed to be given away free to the end user.

I understand total noob's reasoning.  It was designed as a game to be played for free.  If you want to show your appreciation with monetary support, fine.  But it's unreasonable to insist that all who can must give.

Not all feel they must give money to help make someone else' dream a reality.

There is no personal Vendetta :)
We just terminate the free service we provide to those that have no intention to support, if we or those player that donate, need a slot.
After all why shouldn't we prefer those that actually reimburse for services rendered?
If you think of that as personal Vendetta, you have a more serious problem than we all thought.

Just because You have not to pay for what you use, does not mean that no one else does.
No matter the game, someone is paying for your fun.
And if you are categoricaly oposed to paying up for what you use, that makes you a freeloader, in my books.

Now there really are some games that are better than Trem, by far. There you are right, but then ask yourself, why you are playing trem if those other games don't cost you a dime either?

mhmm terminate a service to a person who doesnt support a free game because you operate a server, when the people who made the game dont even charge. nice one. Many people only play this game because it is free, not because they think it is the best game out there.

You made a good point Caveman that I had never really considered and has nothing to do with why I donate, but if you see me Diggs in a game and A_Total_looser (or was that A_Total_noob) in the game and you need a slot freed up, who do you think is leaving?   Hmmm-  Could be a reason for some to donate.

Geeez pl0x. For once in your life, you might want to actually read what is written, instead of trying to twist my words at wich you are so delightfuly inept.

Diggs :) until now we had never the need to actually kick someone because we were in need of a slot. But you got my point :) We'd rather kick somebody known to be a cheapskate than someone who might actually have considered donating.

---

As for the rest... AW will never ask for your money :) The server was set up because WE have fun with this game and not primarily to help the community :)
IF we can not keep the server up due to financial probs, the server will go down.
We do not believe in ASKING for money to pay the bills, but donations are welcome, never the less .)
If you don't want to donate, we are fine with it, but you also have to be fine with getting kicked when a donor needs a slot :D

Now why don't we donate you might ask. Because we are already doing so :) Just because you dont see it or the devs can't feel in in their pocket doesn't mean we don't.
None of our Members (above lvl3) plays a free/OS game w/o giving something back, this is simply not done. And that is why we generaly don't like freeloaders that much :)

Tremulous is available for free, as in beer and speech.
You can make a donation if you wish, but payment is not compulsory.

OK, so because somebody considers donating, but never actaully does, that makes them the better person does it! I answered "No, but i am considering" so does that change your opinion of me?

99% of those 93% will never donate, even if they considered it, just thinking about doing something and not doing only makes yourself feel better, and of course superior to everyone who is honest with themself.

Oh, and in answer to someone else, why am I not playing BF2 and CoH right now ?
Because my current computer cannot run those.
That is why im currently saving up for a Mac Pro ATM.
Until then, all I can really play is Trem (Which is pretty good)
