Wow so many people to agree with.
I felt like I couldn't do jack as an alien for the first week or so, then I still thought dretch was hard as heck for about another month. Now I can finally headchomp (it was like catching that first wave in surfing).
I lost good years of my life playing shooters, even though I'm still pretty terrible. So I immediately gravitated towards humans. 'Gimme a friggin' gun, what do you mean hold down right-mouse to charge up my jump, wtf?' I couldn't get the hang of it. [And I didn't realize that I could join the humans at the right time if I really watched what was going on.] "Unnamed Player joined the aliens." Oh, duh. Click.
Anyway I almost started a thread yesterday asking who play-balanced Tremulous, 'cause it's actually pretty good. It's fun, addictive, and plenty balanced. Compared to Quake3Arena, Unreal Tournament, or TeamFortress, it totally rules. There are so many ways to play Tremulous.
Learn the default maps by heart, as both human and alien.
Go on an empty server, build a base, in case anybody comes on to play against you, then go try to destroy the enemy base. Try that on every default map. Which was harder, human or alien, and why?
Now go play against some real players. They'll pwn you, but at least you'll know what's going on, where the bases are, what you're supposed to do.
If you can win the "single-player" version of Tremulous as a granger/dretch, with no-one to kill, and turrets as your enemy, my hat is off to you. A stage1 human can destroy an 'unmanned' enemy base with a blaster and patience. Carrying a ckit. Try that as a granger or a dretch.
As stated above, though, at stage2, aliens kick ass. And as also stated above, without teamplay, humans are either toast, they outnumber the aliens, or they have a player who is so much better than anyone else on the server (or players, plural), it wouldn't matter. They will pwn you anyway.
However, if someone on the human team shows some initiative, and other players are alert enough to listen to his suggestions, and choose to cooperate together, they can own the aliens. I was on a team that won in that map where the humans always lose, UTCSb, and we ruled. Actually my team ruled. I just took down turrets in the default base when I was asked to. So did like three other people. It turned the tide.
Tremulous is pretty interesting, even on the public servers. This was either at SST or BeerGarden, someplace usually pretty wide open. Some players I knew from seeing their tags were working together on my team and I just jumped in. Most memorable game yet, instant matchklan, breaking up again as soon as the game is over, shifting, changing, teammates becoming foes in the next round. Good sheet.
The game forces humans to have the hive mind, and aliens can act as individuals. I think that's kewl. Plus, as a n00b, it forces you to play on both sides. Later on, you choose the side you like (aliens 'cause they can pwn pinkskins, humans to use the fun toys) or play with people you know/meet 'cause you want to and can. I LIKE BOF'.
