Wired crash error.
« on: January 22, 2007, 07:39:31 pm »
Tremulous is crashing every time I start it, and its really pissing me off now.
When it starts it just sits there on the menu, with the background music on a half-second loop and the mouse and console etc not working. I then have to kill it to make it go away.

I am running the default version on XUbuntu edgy. (reinstalled)
I also tried removing the ~/.tremulous, but that didn't help.

I any one can help me fix this, I will be very appreciative.

Code: [Select]

Signal 15 is SIGTERM. Try running Tremulous from debugger and let us know what does it say.

You are prolly missing the sound library.
Ubuntu site saves:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/libopenal0a

I think it's that one, but http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/libsdl1.2debian might do it too

Whole Tremulous package content:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/games/tremulous

ok, thanks for the help.
I installed libopenal0a from apt, but that didn't help.
I also installed tremulous from sources (rev 755) and that didn't work either.

I'll run it under gdb when I figure out how to use it.

Simply do this:
Code: [Select]
gdb tremulous
run
*SIGTERM*
quit

That's all there is to do to get some info. If you rebuild Tremulous with debugging symbols, it'll even tell you the code line which was being executed when the game received SIGTERM.

Ok, sorry about the time it took me to get this done, but here it all is.

I compiled tremulous with make debug (sources that come with the installer), and run it under gdb. Had to kill X.
so I ran gdb tremulous 2>&1 | tee ~/tremlog and got this out: http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~dsever/tremlog

the interesting bit is:
Code: [Select]
Sys_Error: Couldn't load default.cfg
tremulous: src/unix/unix_main.c:354: Sys_Exit: Assertion `ex == 0' failed.

Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.
0xffffe410 in __kernel_vsyscall ()

This is all well beyond my C skills, so any help would be appreciated.

Please run tremulous from GDB again and use the 'bt' (backtrace) command after those quoted lines. So far, the behaviour is correct. That assert is there to get the backtrace. Whatever went wrong, it's not in the log.

Wait a minute, how do you run GDB on Tremulous, or more importantly, where is the file through which you run Tremulous and what file type is it (executable file or symlink)? That GDB output is useless because it crashes on missing files BEFORE your problem actually happens. :roll: Run
Code: [Select]

which tremulous
ls -l `which tremulous`
file -L `which tremulous`
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

Code: [Select]
$ which tremulous
/home/david/bin/tremulous
$ ls -l `which tremulous`
lrwxrwxrwx 1 david david 35 2007-01-29 23:51 /home/david/bin/tremulous -> /home/david/tremulous/tremulous.x86
$ file -L `which tremulous`
/home/david/bin/tremulous: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, not stripped

/home/david/tremulous/tremulous.x86 is the right file, but gdb provides differnt output when I use the full path (sorry, I just assumed it would work with out the path)

http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~dsever/tremlog3 has the new stuff.

Again, this doesn't seem to be your real problem. Do you run GDB from system console (without X server) or from xterm?

You'll have to set DISPLAY shell variable to whatever is set in xterm then. Otherwise Tremulous won't find your X server. I assume DISPLAY is set to :0.0 (default for single local X server). You should check for your value by running `echo $DISPLAY` from xterm.

Code: [Select]
DISPLAY=':0.0' gdb tremulous

I am having generally the same problem, start the game and within say 20 seconds, some times sooner than later the game and mouse freeze, the music loops, and I have to control+alt+backspace out and kill tremulous in the process dialog. I'm running Ubuntu Edgy as well, I have the libs at the beginnng of this topic libopenal0a and libsdldebian I think.

definitely not leet....not sure I'm running gdb right...here is what I have so far. I apologize upfront for my ignorance.

Well, you DO run gdb right, almost.
1) Don't use full path to Tremulous executable, see above posts
2)
Quote from: "next_ghost"
... If you rebuild Tremulous with debugging symbols, it'll even tell you the code line which was being executed when the game received SIGTERM.

ok I typically run tremulous from the desktop, tremulous is installed through synaptic, and the file I run it through is a symlink to the full path. But when I run "gdb tremulous --quiet" it chokes on the fact that its not an executable? Am I going to have to unistall through synaptic and reinstall from source with make debug, and then run gdb? As much as I would love to solve this, I may just wait for the next release.

No, it crashed because you had specified the full path to the symlink, not the executable. When you specify the full path, Tremulous will search for base directory in that path (unless specifically compiled to search elsewhere first). No base directory = crash. If you run just `gdb tremulous` instead, it'll look in the right place and it'll work. Also there's no need to uninstall. Simply grab the sources either from SVN (revision 755) or from the installation package, compile them for debug and copy the compiled tremulous.x86 next to the one you use now. Then just run GDB on the compiled executable.
