tremulous on a macbook?
« on: January 29, 2007, 03:39:36 pm »
Hey there,

Is anyone having any luck playing Tremulous on an Intel MacBook? I haven't DL'd the game yet. I also haven't installed XP yet. Is anyone experiencing any problems running in OS X? Oh, and wtf is Universal Binary and what does it mean to me? Please excuse the massive ignorance. I go, now, to read FAQs and search wikis.

Looking for a cool game with decent teamplay that might run on my new laptop. Oh and connection speed is 5600+ kbps DL. Or so the speedtest website told me.

Any Tremulous MacBookers out there playing in OS X?

So to run Tremulous on my MacBook, I should skip OS X and WinXP, DL a Linux-based OS, and run which version of the game?

Can't I just use the latest Mac build? Is it 20060625.dmg? Will that work with OS X on the Intel MacBook? Sorry, I was googling about nine other things and hadn't gotten to Ubuntu yet (again, actually). I know diddly squat about computers, but i was sufficiently l33t to get scripts running in Tribes1 Renegade mod. I'm no programmer, but I can find the tilde key.

Thanks.

I don't know much about mac's, but Apple.com is hosting the mac release tjw made.  I don't know if the macbook will meet trem's requirements, but it seems like it will do fine.

Thanks, OverFlow. There are a few different .dmg links floating around out there, I just wanted to see if Apple has the latest one, and make sure that .dmg is the right file for the MacBook. The game looks awesome. I can't wait to try it. I just don't want to load up the wrong version. I saw a MacForums post that said someone was getting 90fps in OS X on a MacBook, but it sounded too good to be true. I'm hoping tjw will stop by in the next couple of days and set me straight on the path to being the next feeder du jour. Thanks again. :dretch:  :human:  :)

I have OSX (Not on a Macbook, but a iMac G4).
That link that OverFlow provided is the thing that I downloaded.
Once youve done that, just...er...enjoy !

Actually, no, there are two more things.
Firstly, dont leave the Tremulous folder on the desktop.
That way, you can mod it and put new maps/mods/etc in.
Eg: If you have a folder on desktop (Not saying you do, just a example) called 'All Desktop Items', and in that a folder called 'Games', put it in there.
If you leave it on the desktop, it denies you permission to mod the original game.
Just make sure you dont leave it there.

Oh, and secondly, when you join a game, make sure you turn 'Auto download' on in the options (Escape). This way, you wont have to manually download maps from other people, but can just enter a room which is playing a map you dont have, and it will automatically download instead of telling you (Forgot exact message) that you dont have it.

Recommeded server: Aliens Wrath

Once again, enjoy !  :D

OK, here we go:

Definitely install and keep OSX. Apart from anything else, it's likely to be the only OS that any official tech support, er, supports. You may then, if you wish, download an Ubuntu disk image, write your own disk, and install that, but keep this in mind:

1) Ubuntu was, at least for me, much more of a chore than OSX, and may take some significant getting-used-to.
2) There are not now, and may not ever be, any Linux drivers for the standard mac wireless network cards. You're going to be tethered to an ethernet cable for as long as you use it.

As for Windows, keep in mind that you'll have to buy a copy and that it's a terrible operating system (just kidding ;) but seriously, I never use it and you should question whether it will actually be worth your money and HD space).

Also what A_Total_noob says about desktop and so forth is simply untrue. That said, everything else is pretty good advice. It's easier, though, to turn on autodownload either with /cl_allowdownload 1 in the console or /menu ingame_options in the console (the latter is also useful for a lot else).

Well, I'm on my way to the computer store to get more RAM (updating to 2 gigs). Maybe that'll help with running games on a GMA950. If anyone is running Tremulous (or any other games) on a MacBook in OS X, and has any pointers, let me know.

I already bought XP, although I haven't opened it yet, so running in Windows will not be a problem, if I decide to go that way instead. Since I already plan on running OS X and XP (possibly in BOTH Boot Camp and Parallels*), I doubt that I will also be installing a Linux-based OS, just to play Trem. But one never knows. The graphic advantage would have to be huge.

*We use both PowerPoint and Keynote, Quicktime and Flash, iTunes and Media Player at my job. We deal with a variety of users who have prepared their own content and need it reinforced with projection and sound. We're interested in seeing how well a MacBook handles a variety of media in BootCamp vs. Parallels. Just a little informal experiment, in case you are wondering why I would consider putting two copies of Windows on a Mac laptop.

Thanks for the advice benmachine, DASPRiD, Threydor, OverFlow. And, hey, A_Total_noob, don't feel alone. There are bugs here to keep you company.   :dretch:  :granger:  :o  Watch your six!

Downloading later today. The Trem videos on YouTube looked really chunky on this MacBook. (Of course, Quake is prettier when you're standing still, but admiring the view gets you croaked pretty quick.) I hope the game looks a little better actually running than in those picture-of-a-picture shots! Lost Planet and Gears of War may become my games of choice, because the xBox360 may become my gaming console by default. But there's only one way to find out...

I play on my MacBook (in OSX), which has Intel gfx. It runs decent, kinda low FPS at native res (sometimes drops to 60 or so in bases), but it's playable.
Use the link that's on Apple's website, it comes with a README from TJW that has info on running it.

A_Total_noob, nice link, thanx. I have a big pile of hardware to hook up and software to install, but one day I may actually post all the MacBook gaming threads on my homepage.

TinMan, right on. Hope to see you on a server soon. How long can you play before the MacBook gets all fiery red hot? Are you using an external mouse and keyboard? Wireless? Bluetooth? External monitor? AirPort? Express or Extreme? How much RAM? Which CPU? Which hard drive? And did you opt for the Combo or SuperDrive? What size monitor(s)? And are you playing on battery or AC? What other games have run well on it? Thanx.

My MacBook doesn't get fiery hot, I have the latest firmware updates and have followed a tweaking tutorial found on lifehacker.com to get my temp down and my fans up.

The only external hardware that I use is sometimes a mouse, but I've been playing Quake 3 with a touchpad for so long that it doesn't matter that much, Mac is a little funky though because it seems that the touchpad accelerates. I also have my keys rebound as I do with any game on any Operating System where it lets me modify them.

I have 1GHz Intel Core Duo (not C2D) and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM. I have a black MacBook so it has a SuperDrive. It's not a pro, so it only has a 13-inch screen which runs at 1280x800. (which you can get trem to run in with 'r_customwidth 1280, r_customheight 800;r_mode -1;vid_restart')

When I play with an external mouse I use my honky Fatal1ty 10/10 mouse which is the closest any mouse has ever come to fitting my hand without my hand going numb from dragging on the mouse pad. I HIGHLY discourage anyone from purchasing the 10/10 as the buttons get stuck and break easily, if you really want a Fatal1ty mouse then get the 20/20 where this is fixed and the mouse is of higher quality.

I use bluetooth to send files to my Nokia N800.

I play most of the games that I play on my desktop, Quakes 1-3, Unreal Tournaments, American McGee's Alice, Sauerbraten, Battle for Wesnoth, StarCraft: Broodwars, etc... I boot into linux for some games, but most of the time I'm in OSX on it.

I play on SST and $PC$ servers, you can find me there.

Just DL'd it and it works and the counter on the screen says 90fps whenever I stop long enough to look at it. Bluetooth mouse and keyboard function smoothly and setup in OS X amounts to turning them on and waving them at the MacBook while clicking thru a quick setup guide. Can't wait to try the new 22" external monitor. Supposedly I can run in clamshell mode. Tremulous ain't easy. But it sure is fun and looks real good. Join now!

The default FPS cap is 85, if uncapped it will wander into three digits a little.
I set it to high settings and then changed the resolution to 1280x800.

The big monitor works. Playing as a dretch on that screen is freaky. I haven't tweaked the controls other than to name myself, in-game. What mods are you playing? What are the two or three good ones? Any Intel Mac patches? What are the good map packs and are they in the same format on Mac as PC? Do I still need to get Winzip?

So. it looks like the beginner strategy is to try dretch and bite, or unprotected human with automatic rifle (default quakespawn). Stage 1: Seek and destroy. What button do you push to let go of the ceiling and drop? Or don't the physics work like that? Any secondary attack with that rifle? What's the best human upgrade?

The big monitor is apparently 1680X1050. I think you guys have told people a few thousand times already, but what's that magic console entry to tell the game what resolution you want? I wonder how that'll look on the MacBook?

Tilde. Sweet memories of Unreal1. U4e botmatch. Imported weapon mods in addon SP campaigns. God_ammo.

Cheers.
