AVALANCHE : a new server...
« on: February 03, 2007, 04:53:08 am »
I recently set up a new public server called Avalanche!

Avalanche is intended to give you a fun, fair, fast-paced medium-scale game with low lag and dependable moderators. 8)

The server is located in Rochester, NY and should be able to handle 25-40 players; the limits haven't been pushed yet.  Avalanche is currently running the Risujin/Avenger v3 game.qvm, and a rotation with mostly standard maps.  If there's enough traffic I will add new maps and take customization requests.

Questions and comments of any sort are welcome.  The server webpage is at http://avalanche.admin.googlepages.com, and you can reach the owner/administrator (that's me) at avalanche.admin(<at>)gmail.com.  Or you can just post in this thread. :)

I'm currently looking for new moderators.  Moderation is primarily by invitation, but suggestions are welcome.  In particular I'm looking for well-known, friendly players with some moderation experience.  If you know a player who fits the bill, please let me (and them) know!

Im guessing you're in rochester. Also, lost the avengers qvm, it suckskinda.
 Also, is this server dedicated and what type of connection is it on?

Nah, it's a quick and easy source for all the best server features on the "market" today. Get it, keep it, love it. That's just my advice though, I don't mind because I'm european and rarely play over that kind of distance. I do have to put up with your weird hostname in my browser though :cry: (j/k, I don't mind that much. It's kinda counterproductive in the long run, though)

Knockback = really Bad.
Dretch ffire = bad.
Slap = bad.
Layout = bad

Easier to just compile your own qvm.

By 'bad' do you mean it adds to lag?  Or that you don't like the gameplay?

If you mean gameplay, well... on Avalanche, Dretch ffire is off, I like knockback, no admins have slap (only me, and I almost never use it), and layout is only used to provide a default base with some defense for the humans on Transit.  But I like some of the other features like share/donate etc.  :)

I may do that if we see enough traffic to justify it.  There are a couple of features I would like to add...  But right now we're in the building-traffic phase, so I'm sticking with a quasi-standard setup for the moment.

Ouch.  I'm sorry about that... I'll think about changing it.  The problem is that as far as I can tell, Trem doesn't support interesting extra characters the way Quake 3 did... so you can't make interesting-looking servernames outside of ascii text.  :(  I may just take them out.  We'll see...

Can you tell me what the server hardware and connection is? I ping really high for living within 20 miles of the server.

What kind of ping do you get?  I'm behind a hardware (router) firewall, that might have something to do with it.

Email me about it and I'll see if I can narrow down the cause...

After being down for several days, Avalanche is back up.  Now with a new ranking system written by yours truly.  (It replaces the "kills" column in the scoreboard.)  We're running Avenger's 'mod' (from SVN 879) as a base.

No client modifications required!
