I can't stop wallwalking!!
« on: February 11, 2007, 02:56:12 am »
OK, two (dozen) alien faction n00b questions:

1) How do I stop wallwalking (or get the server to recognize I'm standing on the floor, in the middle of the room)? I've tried jumping, re-toggling "C", standing out in the open, etc. What am I missing? I don't mind being a good little advanced granger, and hanging hives and trappers in the base, but after a while, I wanna evolve and join the attack, or at least be a bigger, meaner defender. But the server says I'm still wallwalking!

2) On a related note, where's the ctrl-k on this thing? How do I suicide? I had such a nice base going yesterday, and I couldn't even get myself shot at. My team had the humans holed up in the big room. But  the server said I was wallwalking, and wouldn't let me evolve. And then I couldn't even find the suicide knob. Maybe the correct keystroke is command-k on a Mac? Do I have to pull down the console just to end it all? Where are you, Dr. Kevorkian?

PlayerOne is still stuck to a ceiling, with his build rights revoked, and he thinks he hears chainguns and painsaws

P.S. Is it worth taking down acid tubes to put up hives? What's a better defense, a hive or a trapper? When's a good time to lay out boosters, and how far away from the base should they be? Is a hovel worth the investment in sentience? Is there a way to look through all the alerts and messages? (Can I pull down the console and scroll back thru it?) How many eggs is too many eggs? Granger building is fun, but sure seems complicated.

whatever you have bound to wallwalk should work to get you un-stuck, as it were
I have heard of some people having problems with not being able to evolve because they are stuck on wallwalk.

as for your second question, yes, you need to open console and type /kill to die...OR you can type in /bind o kill and that will be your suicide button

It's not always best to swap out acid tubes for hives.

Hives are rather flimsy and easily destroyed, the range is poor, and the bees can be dodged or outran to some degree.

A well placed trapper is probably superior to a hive.

Hovels are cheap, and can make a more useful barricade than the ...barricade.

If you pull down the console, you should be able to scroll through it with the Page up and page down buttons.

- Hovel is free
- Working trapper + hive = dead human
- Working trapper + acid tube = slightly hurt armored human

Also:
- Acid tube = no jetpacks near it
- Hive = no jetpacks in the whole room
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

Acid tubes have a higher damage per second. They are cheaper i think, but i dont build much.

Also i think acids are splash so they hurt more than one human at a time.

Hive cover a whole area.  Its useful to know depending on the size of the area you are trying to defend.

You can stack enough acids together to fry a human when they come through a door.

Trappers make all defenses work better.  They make anything more deadly.  However, trappers aren't 100% in terms of trapping people.

I never build hives, they can only ever attack one human at a time, and there's no guarantee for damage, on the other hand, acid tubes guarantee damage as long as the human walks within proximity of it, they cant be outrun, their range is less than a hive's but they can damage a group of humans at once.

Acids can be shot at outside their range, even while inside a lot of alien bases.  Jump, run and shoot.  1 acid can't kill a naked rifle unless they are standing directly on top of it.

Hives are a threat if not dealt with.  The best defensive structure is a hive that you can't see.  They hit from long range, which acids can't do.  I ignore most acids, you can run past them and sometimes run past trappers.  The best base is a thoughtful use of both.

booster should built immediately in S2.
Where? somewhere safe, probably the main base unless a huge map.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

they do, but the damage is calculated by the proximity to the tube, so extremely high tubes do little, 'cept eliminate jettards

1hit the walwalk  key again to stop
2 press the (`~) key to open the console and type /kill, and you will die in 10 seconds, but you lose an evo/kill so only use in situations where you are completely trapped, and a teammate hitting you won't unstick you, or you can't get out because no wallwlalk and you can't climb a ladder, then, a dretch should walwalk on the bottom of the ladder, jump on him, then jump, and have him move up, repeat until you can get out

egg amounts depend on the size of your team, 1-5 or less is one egg, 4-12 is 2, and 12+ is three. you shouldn't use more than three or your base will be poorly defended. trappers pwn, and are the best, even if they don't do damage, because then a teammate can take him out, it's good to have tubes and hives  because hives are too expensive, and should be used for om/egg guarding because they have small health. tubes are pretty much the staple defense, barricades suck, except if killing one is the only way to get to the om, like in nexus6, and then can serve as a stall, and the humie will hopefully die before the om is fully sawn

As much as I build, which is basically every game.
For Humans: I never use teslas unless i have a shitload of Build Points. I never build in a line. Always in a semi-circle.
For Aliens, If anything, i can get away with using only 1 tube and like 8 trappers. Still effective as long as there is someone in base to watch.

Use hives for corners near choke points, ie, where a human would stop or slow down, or put hives out of sight, but within range, as they will chase things. I usually put acids on all the entrances, and hives near the om, cause its a target.

funniest building story ever:
just happened
on arachnid 2, humies built under the staircase, so one guy went granger, and used almost every bp above their base
s3 came, he built a hive, which chased down anyone in the human base area
priceless

Yeah, the default bindkey (C). Playing on a MacBook with external keyboard via Bluetooth. Will try again on a different server, but it's not the first time it happened to me. I just started playing a few weeks ago, and I've never been able to stop the wallwalking once it's toggled on. Weird, huh? Operator headspace? Me check again.
