Freeware fps-deathmatch game for windows, linux and Mac Os.
Deathmatch style.
Good graphics, but not really as team oriented as trem.

Try it out!

I have this downloaded, but no maps (I think?). I haven't bothered, because it just seems too far into the fast-paced, twitch-tactic Quake arena of FPS for me to care about. The only reason I downloaded it in the first place was because I saw mention of grappling hooks, and I have a great love for grappling hooks in games. That'll probably push me over the edge to downloading maps eventually lol.

It's a fun game, for DM, not much else. I'd recommend Warsow and Argonium for people looking for other Quake-like FPS'es that bring you back to the day.

Nexuiz is cool.

Not having any maps downloaded is not a problem.  Maps automatically download very quickly because currently they are restricted to external ftp or http servers, although this will change in the next version.

Some of the maps are rather plain, but that's not what Nexuiz about.  It's about the gameplay.

If you were disappointed with a previous version, it would be worth trying again.  It has been straightened out quite a bit.  Performance has increased significantly in the last couple versions, weapon balance has changed and has more or less improved, and the fancy effects can be turned off to get a playable framerate.

A lack of servers is indeed a problem.  Unless you are in Europe or are on the Eastern Coast of the US, you will probably have problems with lag.

Their community is generally better than ours as well.

Argonium looks interesting, but they barely even have a website at all.  Does anyone even play it?

Have they found a solution to the Invis-Player-Bug yet?
If not, the game sux, big time.

Edit:
I was asked which game...

Nuxiuz is the one with this bug.

TinMan, thanks for all the links to all of these sites. I've checked out all of them that you've posted. The Argonium link looks pretty crusty. The news page is from 2005. Is this still a game with any active servers, or does it support botmatch?

Have you tried Nexuiz CTF? What do you think of the weapons? I can't even remember if there are classes or not. (I looked at a lot of websites; thanks, by the way, I got an education about the freeware community.) It seems (as MC Artman says) the problem is also lack of servers. Maybe now that Apple put it on their freeware page, it will get enough support in the US. If it runs on a Core2Duo MacBook, that is.

Invis-Player-Bug! That sux...completely.

Many people have recommended War$ow. I checked out their website, but can't even remember it. What's it about?

Mini-poll: War$ow or Nexuiz?

God, what do you have, a 486? Installed games shouldn't slow down pcs, unless they are 2nd rate shitty puzzle games from 'official' game sites.

Warsow is pretty non-free and very scavengful of maps and even music (stolen from Quakerally no credit etc).

Argonium is pretty non-Free. I don't think anyone plays it (it's a very very average game that gets the 1998 cliches all right)

The invisible player bug in Nexuiz was fixed a hell of a long time ago.

CTF in Nexuiz is just another game mode.  The weapons are the same as in regular gameplay.  The weapons are generally well balanced except for the Crylink (it's not very useful), but we're trying to think of something to make it more interesting.

There are no classes.

Nexuiz is also easier for new players since they went light on the uber trick jumping.

Thx, I didn't keep up on it :)

Edit:

I just installed Nexiuz again to test the bug...
And the bug i am talking about is not fixed. I am still able to go invis during a match.

I was into Argonium for the Q2 jumping and the really sweet lighting on weapons and such. I doubt that there would ever be anyone on servers for it, but it'd be a fun project to revive.

Yeah, nice graphics (darkplaces engine) and a cool community. The 2.3 release gives a major FPS increase over the current 2.2.3 - grab the latest svn to check it out.

Q1 and DarkPlaces are so far apart it's not even funny.
While DP was developed over Q1, it has been changed and tweaked so extensively that, when looking at the code as well as abilities, they bare no resemblance.

DP is one of the highest end engines out there, commercial or GPL. But it's very resource hungry.

Also, don't judge DP by Nexuiz. Nex needs a graphical overhaul in terms of models and animation in order to really shine.
Check out Zymotic to see what DP can really do.

@Caveman
The invisible bug was fixed in 1.0.1, 3 weeks after the initial release.
The only way to go invisible right now is to pick up a Invis powerup and that's a feature.
Check your client and see what version you have.

2 things that are great about Nex is the phenomenal community and frequency of updates. There is a patch every 1-2 months (sometimes faster) so bugs and issues are taken care of almost immediately.

The main reason for the great community is the fact that 70% or Nex players are 22-34 years of age. Not 12-17, like the majority of GPL games.
You'll have a hard time finding flame wars or cretins anywhere on the forum or in-game.

@Death On Ice
Make sure you don't call Nexuiz "freeware" on the official forum. You'll be given extensive examples, links and reading material explaining the difference between GPL and "freeware/shareware"

Sorry, I downloaded it yesterday again and did some fooling with it.
I did not need to change the client to reproduce the invis-bug. Timing still is all that is needed.

That's very strange then.
Would you mind submitting a bug report or PM me with it and I'll submit it.

Also, are you able to do it offline only or online as well?
(servers do a model check and reload on set interval times so it takes care of the old bug. if this is something unrelated, I'm worried if it's reproducible online as well.)

Great!!
I've installed 2.2.1 (from the Debian's repo - the newest version they've packaged so far is 2.2.3 in unstable...) and I get about 15 fps with all gfx options at the max @1280x1024.
So I will have to try out the 2.3.
