ok we need to get some error messages first.
so please start a term and a screen session.
In this screen session you start trem, after you killed X, reattach the screen session and report the errors given .)

Try running it windowed first?

easier to just ctrl-alt-f1 and then 'killall tremulous.x86'

looks to me that you need to install a gfx-driver that supports the
XFree86-VidModeExtension
XF86VidModeSwitchToMode

ORL?
Mind letting us in on what version it is and what your current distro is? Also say if you run any weird eyecandy like Berly, Compiz, XGL, ...if any of those ring a bell.

OK but when i disable aiglx/compiz by adding
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
to xorg.conf
The problem persists.

Wait a minute?
X.org? not XFree86?
Sounds to me that you have the wrong X-server for your gfx-driver.
Up to a certain release Nvidia stoped supporting XFree and some older releases did not support Xorg.
Have you tried with the OS-driver?

I have xorg 7.1 and nvidia 9631 which are recent.
Nvidia 9631 support xorg 7 and nvidia 9631 is the last one for my graphic card.
I don't know why the error messages are related to
XFree86-VidModeExtension
XF86VidModeSwitchToMode
but i don't use XFree86 for a while.

opengl programs don't work most of the time when a compositing window manager is running (compiz), you will need to start metacity to play tremulous (or kwin if you're on kde). on a side note: compiz is outdated and horribly buggy, get beryl, it's no longer outdated, but still horribly buggy :P.

I know there is a problem between composite extension and opengl. I already tried to disable composite extension adding
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
to xorg.conf.
But i have the same problem.

there's a difference between a composite extension and a compositing window manager (both can cause problems apparently), tremulous won't work with any version of compiz running that i've seen so far, you need a regular wm (kwin, metacity, etc)

You seem to have an NVIDIA Geforce4 MX, an old NVIDIA gpu/chipset. Are you using the Legacy drivers?

What distro are you using?

BSoD means the kernel has died. If it's just your X window server, get to the system console (or even another independent X window server instance), kill the dead server and fire it up again. Unlike on windows, the X window server is not a vital part of the OS. It's just another userspace application.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

I run tremulous in Beryl with the latest (beta) nvidia drivers with aixgl, it runs at a little lower frame rate, but I don't get a black screen.

This might help you with some info, I had to use it when I ran Compiz/XGL: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176636

Caveman: The Legacy drivers support compositing. You can run Beryl on a Geforce MX 440, and reliably well, in fact.

Try installing Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. I heard it's the perfect OS.

You heard wrong, if a person depends on 64-it and windows then it's for them and definitely beats 64-bit Windows XP, but other than that it's not that great, not everything is 64-bit in it and there's some gaming problems since it uses the Direct3D API (I think that's the name) to take in OpenGL commands and fake an old version of it, if you use DirectX applications only then I'd say yeah...if you have a box for it, then go for it.
If you use OpenGL (trem) I'd say stick to whatever you're on now until they figure something out for Vista, hopefully by the first service pack.
