Current map pack?
« on: February 22, 2007, 09:46:33 am »
Maybe this belongs on the mapping forum, but is the recommended map pack the one to be found at Tremulous Info? I see that different clans and servers have their own preferred maps, but is there a general group of add-on maps that will get an average player through a day of play without too many downloads? (Not that I mind the downloads; I got a couple of really cool maps over at OPP's server - I hope they're in the base folder now). But if I want to play the public servers, which other maps should I get besides the default ones?

PlayerOne put in quite a few hours playing Tremulous today
he even got three shotgun dretch kills and enjoyed them very much
yeah, shotgun dretchkills - thx low ceilings! :dretch:  :o  :P  :D  :battlesuit:

I help to maintain a map repository at http://mercenariesguild.net/base/
LOTTSA, LOTTSA maps there, and a +300MB map pack (start the download overnight :) )

I'll give you the maps I'd recommend and my worthless little blurb about them:

Hamanuptra - SST plays this a lot.  It's good on large servers.  Don't complain about it, it's a port so it wasn't originally built for tremulous.  Even so it can play very well though it tends to stall mid game due to the fact that the humans always go topside and the aliens always go to the dead end on the top floor.  On rare occasions when they don't it is usually a slaughter.  Humans pin aliens in their base, aliens gain s3, aliens pin humans in their base, timeout or aliens win.  I've only played it on SST though, so the matches will probably be more sensible on servers with a reasonable amount of BP (You won't spend the last 3rd of a game fighting a base ;) )

Ancient Remains - If you don't have it already, you will need it at some point.  Beautiful map.  Alien sided unless the humans know the map well.  Don't let people lie to you though, I've seen good humans take that map.  Oh, and no matter what anyone tells you, don't let humans build in the lava room.  It's a campfest where they are pinned in with little to no hope of escape.  Good aliens will even build them in :)

UTCSb2 - thrown in lots of places.  A small symetrical map that isn't like atcs, but you'll think of it due to the maps small size.  Fun map with good teams, short map with feeder teams :P

atcszalpha - Thrown in lots of places.  ATCS if it was a big map I guess.  It has ATCS in the name so people love it.  Don't get me wrong, I've had lots of fun on this map and don't dislike it, but it is mostly a camping map and I don't fool myself, people vote on it cause it has atcs in the name.

procyon - Thrown in lots of places, beautiful and huge, you may want to
load this one up locally and get to know it or you will be completely lost :)  Take note of the signs too, they will help.

pulse-beta3 - this map seems to have become less popular, but was VERY popular for a while and probably will be again.  It is very large and unique.  If it's not the most beautiful map in terms of detail, then it is close.  If you don't wander through this one locally for a while, you'll be finding tunnels and nooks and cranny's for months :)

thermal - SST used to play beta 2 of this map a lot.  Not sure anymore.  Still, it is a nice map and can make for some fun games.  The downside is the lamer spot for humans is too easy to move to early in the game, so the potential for a campfest goes up quite a bit.

derelictb-beta04 - Some people really don't like this map, I am not one of them.  The downside I see to it is the difficulty of moving the human base outside of it's default room.  Still, I've played lots of great matches here.  Plus, I like yellow ;)

Flap - Brand spankin new, so people are checking it out a lot (as they are with ancient remains).  First use of jump pads I've seen in tremulous and they work very well.  A beautiful map, I suspect that it may have a fatal flaw in that aliens can't evolve in their base, though that may balance out the advantage aliens get at the jump pads.  TBO, I haven't played this one enough to know but, the games I have played have been pulse pounding and fast.

Nice rundown of the maps, although I have to disagree with you on ATCS Zone Alpha a bit..

ATCS is the most popular map, because it's easy and really basic. If you're a new player, playing on ATCS is best since you won't have to trouble yourself with the sometimes rather complicated layouts of the maps (Procyon, anyone?! :P). ATCS is a rather easy no-brainer. Games almost always end the same (Humans either win at Stage 2 with pulserifle, or at Stage 3 with Lucifer cannon/Pulse rifle combinations. Sometimes they painsaw the eggs, too. Aliens usually win by destroying the reactor with a Marauder, or by Dragoonhumping the base, or by sniping/tyranting at Stage 3) and especially for new players, this is good.

Now, ATCS Zone Alpha, and also UTCS (very popular map. Although it's slightly becoming less popular now. Used to be huge at servers like Fun-Zone), are basically the 'next step' for avid ATCS players: basically, they offer the same 'circle-styled' layout as ATCS has, but with a few twists. UTCS is more basic than ATCS Zone Alpha, but ATCS Zone Alpha has the familliar ATCS look, and is pretty much the same layoutwise as the original ATCS, but with a few additions that are easilly spotted by new players. Also, great map for Massdrive-campers and dretch/basilisk lurkers. Good map for learning the basics and employing various strategies for different classes/weapons, while not having to bother with weird and confusing base layouts, I'd say.

Tuple pretty much covered the essential ones, but you might also want to get these :

Outpost p4
Sokolov
Gamma Core
Medusa CTM (Only cause its mine  )

I'm also not a big fan of atcszalpha, but it is quite popular.

Oh and tremulous.info hasn't been updated in a long time. (right?)

Note to Mac users: I found my add-on maps by searching pk3 in Spotlight. The laptop (or OS X, I guess) puts them in Library > Applications Support, or Applications Support > Library (it won't show me the path like it did the first time). It doesn't really matter. I can join a server playing them. I wonder if I can start a server playing them if they're not in the base folder? For the record, playing at SST and SI1, mostly, but also at DretchStorm, PC$, OPP and others, I've got the following:

atcszalpha b1
gloom2beta2
ancient remains (I like the ceilings)
hamunaptra
gloom3t
arkadia (Unreal/Deus Ex memories - thx, OPPressed.net, I think)
UTCSb2

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the other maps/sites mentioned. The last one is in French, but the map names look easy enough to recognize (they're in English, and end in .pk3, so even I can find them).

Linkage? I just clicked on the flap link on that Bricosoft page. My browser opened the pk3 with text editor (the only words I recognized were "script", "map", "models" & "textures") and the map is not to be found on my machine. Guess I'll stay away from downloads in a foreign language. Just how many characters does the game code use? I saw more umlauts than at a Motley Crue/Motorhead reunion tour.

Uh oh, it did the same thing at the Mercenaries Guild site. I'm farging up, somehow. Maybe it's a Mac thing, but it's probably me. Thankfully, the game does it for me. OS X hints?

why don't you just do a 'save link target as?'

yeah, i have trouble downloading new maps that aren't from tremulous.info. i still have no idea hwo to change a bsp into a pk3, even though people have tried to explain it to me. anyway, you can autodownload a map, but it take a long time.

A .PK3 file is nothing more than a .ZIP file with its extension renamed to .PK3.

Do what now?

Laptop. OS X. Page of single click links. No Winzip, that I know of. Used to have an old PC. Was semi-leet, for 3 months, in early 2000. Now own MacBook. Still don't know what the Apple key does. Sorry. No such right-click sub-menu friendly alternate option appears. Me am wishing.

I have WinXP. Guess I'll download it and a free Winzip, and BootCamp, download the map pack, unzip it, load in onto my hard drive and then put the resulting pk3 files into the laptop.

I wonder if the Mac just wants me to drag the map file to the Tremulous base folder. :-? I got all clever and opened some Tremulous base files with text editor just to see what was so obvious about the code (as is so often repeated by coders - why don't you just such-and-such?), so now my laptop thinks that's what I want to do: view PK3's in text format. Ooh, the textures are so lifelike.  :P

So, sorry for my stoopidity, but how does OS X handle them? Maybe I have some sort of Winzip tool, and don't even know it. I thought Macs used Stuffit. The Trem files I've got now are .cfg & .pk3 files. Not very compuliterate.

Just download the MG map pack : http://www.mercenariesguild.net/base/MG-MapPack.66.zip

and unzip it to /base (wherever that is on your OS). It's 300mb so get started! It includes basically all the maps mentioned.

Not sure how to unzip something in OS X. I don't think I have Winzip, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

Usually, OSX should unzip after download (If it recognizes the file). There are other unzipping programs out on the internet with support for more files if youre interested.

I find it interesting one of the maps is called 'Sokolov' (Great link Tuple, by the way). Could the name of the map be inspired by the MGS3 scientist...?
lawl, people still play Tremulous ?
