I think the balancing of the game is pushing more players away from tremulous right now.  Although a stand-alone version would definetly bring more players, I think the type of people who will stay are mostly the ones who have already tried it.

Also i would like to point out that makeing this a poll in the forum is not that good of an idea, specialy since you need to register to vote, people who would vote here already have the game and would not be interested in a port.

Is a port going to be a lot of work by the way? since it is a port from q3 to q3... i would imagine it would be mostly retexturing that would be needed? since you cant use q3 ones.

I voted for working on open source, but fixing the major balance issues is equally important.  I have 2 friends who would play except they never bought Q3.  I bought the linux version from eb games years ago just because it was $10 when the windows version was still $40.    But I never really played it until I saw Tremulous (former gloom/ns player here).

A totally free stand alone game would make Tremulous very special (there aren't many quality games of this kind yet) and could lead to an influx of contributors, so I'd suggest that it should have a very high priority at least. Maybe the game could be tweaked a little in the process anyway.

Balance, definitely. Right now, I join the aliens if I want to win and the humans if I want to lose. That doesn't apply 100% of the time (exceptionally good players on the human side), but most of the time it does.

I asked Timbo the same thing.  Basically, all the art people are (or rather will be) recreating any models or textures used from q3.  Which thankfully is quite small.  However, apparently there is also a fair amount of programming involved in the switch as well.  This poll is to decide what Timbo should be focusing on.

Definitely sort out the balancing first. Im perfectly fine with Q3A being the host engine for the mod at the moment, and it shouldnt make a difference to anyone either way as long as the mod is fun. I mean a fair number of people still play Gloom and the Q2 engine is close to a decade old. Half-Life is just as ancient and tons of people still play mods for it as well.

Of course nowadays most of the gaming community is addicted to shitfucking MMO's anyway.

You don't exactly need to buy the game anymore really, with the source coming out downloading the game wouldn't really be considered warez  anymore. I don't even think TImbo's server has key authorization, so any key would do really.

The source code has been released under the GPL. However, that doesn't include the Q3 game content -- ID still expects people to pay for it.

Woo yeah . The game content isn't so much of a problem, we don't use very much of it, and what we do use can be replaced quite easily.

well don't stand too corrected   in my case i own a copy of q3 so downloading q3 wouldn't exactly be copyright infringement unless i also upload it to someone

the problem is that it would be a bit of a hassel, mounting isos etc and the bigest problem is that every cd key out there would have been used by atleast 20 cheaters and other types of lamers and i don't want that asosiated with my name.

the path of least resistance for new gamers would be to have a free standalone tremulous game client that you can get from a lot of fast gameing sites with nice bandwith.

So from the point of view of someone who has newer tried your game I say that you should rate a standalone version way above anything else. I would just bring it out to a much larger audience.

hmm this is a good point. and as far as im concerned the last release was pretty damn solid in terms of balance.

well, this poll is kinda old tho. last i heard was that timbo was proceeding work on the standalone version.
