Are there any plans for Bots?
« on: September 16, 2005, 04:33:36 am »
hi, This Mod/Game/TC :p is really awsome!
I like this Alien Predator Style combined with Taktik:)

But i have a question: Are there any plans for Bots?
I know its a little bit harder than an old style deathmatch game
but bots are good for training i think and at the moment they are a little numbers of servers.

p.s: this mod roxx, but more peaple must know about it! :p

p.s.s: sry for my ppor english

greetings

No immediate plans. Writing bots for trem would be decidedly non-trivial, not least because it's a fairly complex game but also because the bots would need to be balanced to the game in addition to the game itself needing to be balanced. Perhaps really long term I'll have a look again (and of course, anybody else is welcome to take a stab at it), but for now there are more important things to be doing.

2 suggestions:

1st: Omnibot to make bots for Tremulous, kinda like what ETF guys did for their mod.

2nd: Some kind of Waypoint Database to allow users to contribute with their own bots gameplay customisation.

Dunno how hard it is to do, but hopefully not that hard... waypoints would then be a 'not that urgent' todo thing.

I think the hardest part about it is building and aliens.  I really have no idea how bots work, but I imagine they're designed with guns in mind.  It would probably be difficult to get them to work properly with all the different abilities of the different alien classes.  Although building isnt necessary, it would be a pretty good feature to have.  And other than just having a bot rebuild a base exactly like how the starting bases are (which are usually bad and have to be expanded on) I don't see an effective way of doing it.

Yes I know it is not an easy task, but if Omnibot can be used in a game like ET with multiple player sets, and class-dependant objectives, It might be possible to do something for Tremulous. I don't have experience with waypoints and stuff about bots, but guys that make maps for quake3arena might have a small idea on how it works.

Anyway, the omnibot documentation is very good, and you can get an easy interface to create the waypoints inside the game, kinda like the sound editor system you have on ET (not sure about q3a).

If I have some spare time I'll try to see if there is any easy integration with the mod. Anyway I'm going to take a look at the bot system in the ETF game, and see if there is something alike or usable in Tremulous. But if you guys could spend a little time at it, you will probably get better results and faster, cause my programming skills are like "none" :P

See ya guys later
