Server problem, any help appreciated
« on: March 11, 2007, 01:05:16 pm »
Ok first time setting up a Trem server, but do hav extensive IT knowledge and work experience. I don tknow everything, but I do know alot.

I have the server up and running, and has been for a few days. I am using my homes connection of 1.5mg connection, so even though wont be great pings, should at least be playable with max of 9 people.

However, it seems it is not listing under the master server list. I realize I cannot see it on a client behind the same router, but even a friend cant see it. And when given an exact ip, and port, doesnt show up, or with inaccurate info.

Ports have been forwarded, and its not firewalled, or have any spyware, in fact its a complete new install of windows, and upgraded. (I realize you would want a linux server, but for now I was just playing around on my windows server, and would at least like to get the problem fixed.

On the screen itself in the server console, it loads fine with only a hitch warning after the load. Connecting to it behind the router using the lan address works fine.

It is up right now if anyone wants to see if they can see it, name of server is "[SU]Practice" (SU and Practice is in red brackets in white) ip and port is: 207.118.113.240:32222   password is: michael

Any suggestion as to the problem, or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
   Talon

Yes indeed they are, unfortunatly this friend isnt helping. I had checked the FAQ before posting to try to resolve. But after you posted that, figured you had a reason and carefully sifted through it again, yet, again found no help.

Please refrain from replying unless you have something specific to add please. If for some reason I am truly blind (happens sometimes ;o) then please point me to what in the faq am I missing.

Also i realize I left out 2 pieces of information in my main post.
(1) this has been a dedicated server, the machine is only running the server.
(2) It has been sending heartbeats to tremulous master server.

I can connect, but it stalls awaiting gamestate.  Do you have UDP and TCP forwarded?  UPnP active? And try forwarding a small range like 32220-32230 and see if that might help.

You can always DMZ the server for a bit for testing.

My 2 cents-

Hm.  I tried to see it about 1 min ago and couldn't get it, even after I added it to favorites.

Based on your description of the console messages, it sounds like it's running properly and sending heartbeats etc.  So, my money is also on port forwarding.  Make sure that you have the correct local IP for your server, make sure that the port number in "+set net_port xxxxx" matches the port that you're forwarding... I'm sure you've done it before, but do it again.  :)

If this doesn't work, then posting a complete console dump might be helpful.

thanks for all the advice, thuogh mos tof it is already done through my testing ;(

ports forwarded are already 32000-33000
and it has been currently been on DMZ for last 2 days running.

the ip is correct as I have used whatismyip.com just to verify each day from the server machine.

The port number has been on 32222 has also been set since day one in the batch file running the dedicated server in allocating the port to use.

and when i forwarded the ports it was for both udp and tcp.

*growles in frustration* :)

thank you for all the advice so far, i realize most of this will solve most problems. With it being on DMZ for the last 2 days though I know its not a port problem on the router at all, and nothing is firewalled on the server for processes running.

only thing i can think of is something conflicting in the software with the master sever (even though it is successfully sending heartbeats, or mabey a problem through the dsl modem itself.

Ill add a server log dump next post.

Q: My server doesn't show up on the Tremulous Master Server List!

Follow that link and you'll find your answer in the FAQ.

Q: My server doesn't show up on the Tremulous Master Server List!
A: Quake 3 uses a function called the 'heartbeat' to broadcast the server as a public server. Otherwise, if the heartbeat is not enabled, the server is up and functioning but is not listed in the Tremulous Master Server list.

To correct this:
When launching the server, ensure you are setting the +set dedicated variable to 2. Setting your server to 1 will not send the heartbeat.

If you notice in my prior post it already is dedicated and sending heartbeats since the beginning. So I appreciate the help but it is not the problem in this case. As mentioned above.

Here is the current server dump, however it seems to have a limit on the amount it keeps as it is not listing from the beginning.  So after this I shutdown the server for the first time in days, and started it up again so you can get a dump of that too.

As for your problem, I think it's : sv_hostname = [SU]Practice

IIRC, hostname should be set to your computer IP/DNS name or your router IP/DNS name if there is one and it is doing some port forward. It is NOT the name the server will be displayed as in the server browser!

Nope, sv_hostname is the name of the server that appears in the game browser.

Not sure exactly what you are refering to as to forwarding to the ip.

The ip is the ip that anyone outside the router would access the router from, then it would forward the port 32222 to the server machine on the lan.

as for sv_hostname, yes that is the name of the server as it appears on the master server list.

any other suggestions?

So the port forwarding is 207.118.113.240:32222 -> 192.168.0.100:32222? OK, download Wireshark, shut the server down for at least an hour (to clear master server cache) and capture the network communication during clean server start. The first heartbeat packet should be followed by getinfo query from the master server.

I think what people are asking here is to make absolutely sure that the right IP is in the DMZ and port forwarding settings, so the router is actually forwarding the ports to the server and not anywhere else on the LAN.

I have exactly the same problem here. I'm not a n00b at computer stuffs and I know router stuffs ( although I'm not leet enough to capture network packets and look for possible errors ). I have forwarded the correct port and checked with uTorrent to see if it works properly, and it does. But I couldn't seem to get my server visible to the external network (people cant see my server, they also cant connect manually). Also, uTorrent port check http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=6744 reported it's not open. So I'm guessing that Trem doesn't bind properly to the correct IP.

local IP: 192.168.1.68
port: 6744 ( 6700 - 6800 hole punched)
router: bethere speedtouch wifi/modem/router
local connection: LAN

external IP : sleek.selfip.net

here is the packets being sent, and seems to me working as inteded, it resolves through DNS the master server in packet number 34-35, sends hearbeat message in packet 36, gets reply asking for info in packet 37, then sends the server info in packet 38. Bolded main parts in each packet.

Exactly. Same here. I used Wireshark and got the same observation. The weird thing is we're not listed on the master server.

It would seem to work work perfectly, except that the getinfo response from your server to the master server is truncated and there is some nonsense chars in there.

Mabey for some reason, the server software is bad. I will redownload all the programs, and retry and see if that helps at all.

The message is not truncated, it's just Wireshark likes to write stuff out that way  And the nonsense chars are binary challenge number bounced back to master server.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

I suppose they couldn't be bothered to place the ASCII version of that part of the dump in the ASCII column :o Evil developers.

Well, everything looks to be working perfectly. You could try to update your router BIOS. Also, are you sure you aren't behind a second router? Just in case.

And last, it is maybe a MTU problem?

Silly questions: Windows firewall?  McAfee/Norton/whatever security program firewall? As Stof said, second router?  What about your ISP, do they provide some kind of firewall service?

Here's my wishlist from highest to lowest priority:[list=1]
  • Open your router's port forwarding setup, post a screenshot.
  • Open a command prompt, run "ipconfig /all", post the output.
  • Where are you located in the world?
  • Screenshots of directory listings for
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base
    • C:\Program Files\Tremulous
    • C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base
    • Make a new folder on the desktop, open it, screenshot the empty folder (with the address bar intact.)
  • The location and content of your server.cfg file.  (Get rid of any passwords before you post it  :D )[/list:o]

1) I can give you a screenshot, but  I have tested the port with utorrent and it port fwded correctly, so it has been tested to work with other software.
2) I'm located at sleek.selfip.net. I run apache on this (just to test my web-apps/php script). It is accessible from outside.
3 - end ) The server runs fine. biotxc aka trollzet connected to my server. It is running fine. The only problem is that certain people don't seem to be able to connect to it, and it's not listed on the master list.

I think maybe it's an ISP problem, although it's weird I can run torrent fine with it. Sorry to hijack your thread talon, but I think we have exactly the same problem here.
