1.0.2 + icculus.org Q3
« on: October 29, 2005, 12:47:06 am »
Hi guys.

I heard about this mod in happypenguin.org and gave it a try. I do not own a copy of the original Q3A so I tried to use the icculus.org source and the demo version (to get a pak0).

Anyway, I tried several combinations.

First I tried to use the binarys without the pak0 (using only the packs supplied in the upgrade patch). It worked allright but a lot of textures where missing inside the maps. I think you should use more custom textures and leaving Q3A ones alone :), or at least include them in your mappack.
After this, I tried to use the demo pak0, and a lot of things changed. Most of the textures where working now, but there where some textures like water textures, that still didn't show up.

My suggestion is to make the mod, or at least the maps, independent from the Q3A full version. If you can get the game to work 100% with only the demo and source or even only the source (from Q3A), you could get a lot more people to play it. And with the proper references, you could even distribute customized binarys in a separate package or included in main pack.

Finally, I don't have the fullgame, as I stated before, and I think I don't have all the features available in the game. I created a local serve to test the game and there where some things I couldn't test.
Example:
When I play alien, I cannot change to all the forms that are described in the manual.
When playing as human, I don't understand how to aquire new weapons (that's probably not a bug but I haven't figured it out yet), and also I dunno how to change faction after chosing one (alien or humans).

Besides this, I liked the look of the game, and the wallclimbing trick is fun :P

So keep up the good work, and if possible, make the game a little bit more independent from Q3A. You guys are almost there ;)

Right now Tremulous is still a Quake 3 mod and needs all (or at least most) the .pk3 files from the game.  We are working on making it so Tremulous will be a standalone, hopefully to introduce the game to even more people.

The reason you can't evolve or buy new weapons when you play a game by yourself is because in order to upgrade you need to have killed some of the enemy to get 'money' you can spend.  If you just want to test the weapons and classes out you can make a game with cheats on like this:

/devmap [mapname]
(join a team)
/g_humanstage 2
/g_alienstage 2
/give funds 2000

for [mapname] I usually use "atcs" because it loads nice and fast.  The "/g_humanstage 2" command sets the humans to the highest stage possible.  and likewise for the alienstage command.  The give funds command gives you points to spend on either buying weapons or evolving into better alien classes.

Another thing you might need to know is that in order to buy a new weapon, an armory must be built and you have to sell your current weapon, then buy a new one.

GPL version pak0.pk3

sdark I am working very hard to create a fully open source version of pak0.pk3. I am currently creating GPL replacements for the files in textures/base_floor. jex has created replacements for many parts of pak0.pk3; but I have no idea what license he wishes to release his work under. I am hoping for a GPL-2 or BSD license but I can only hope.

Glad to hear about you guys.

Linuxgames.com quoted your work and definitely jumping to stand alone will be a hit.

Cheers
