because you're thinking of non-printing characters, 0x00-0x20 are in the ascii character set, and because someone already did that, you just need to convince the people in control of the master server to put up that code.

have it sort by ping first time you open it, add servers you play at to favorites, or servers you think you will play at, and then instead of sorting by name go to favorites and you got servers you want to play on right there and then

I suggest that whoever is in control of the master server should give a grace period of one month, and then start dropping those with non readable characters. Sort by pinging isn't the solution to the issue. These characters are not meant to be read. I just hate those boxes.

Let's start disciplining server owners with some proper stickied rules.

If noobs go to real servers, ones that don't have you fighting bases instead of the enemy players, they will learn the right way how to play, and will actually be better players.

Yes, given a grace period, i suspect many server ops will drop the characters.
However, if you plow into it R1 style, and start banning people without any warning, to get your server back to the top, well, you cant expect the community to be happy.

What R1CH did was right. Maybe you disagree with how he went about it, but nonetheless it was the correct thing to do.

Why should server ops be given a grace period? If you don't have the dignity to not spam the server list you don't deserve any benefit of the doubt that you will change.

When they strip the 0x01 etc. asshole server ops will just start spamming things like AAAAAaaaSST. I say just ban their servers for 30 days, I'm sure they will at least change their ways at that point, until they get banned again.

The problem with just dropping servers with funny characters in the beginning is that there's always going to be a character thats considered 'before' all the other characters.  It doesn't fix the problem, instead you just lose a lot of the servers on the list, and there essentially become less places for people to play at.

Default sort by ping fixes the problem, instead of punishing those who want their servers to be played at.

Sort by name after stripping every single non alphanumeric char ( color codes too ) from the name. After that, server admins will have to call their server "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasomething" if they want to be first which would be very very ugly for them

Sorting by ping is the solution to people trying to get on top of the list by 'cheating', and that's one issue. The other issue here is they're using unreadable characters which doesn't look pretty at all. Let's do both stripping non-legit characters and sorting by ping (already in last time I heard). Of course if we don't want the extra processing needed (or too lazy to code that in) we can start dropping them all.

Also, I would think a server search by name feature useful when you have a list too long.

Yes, auto-sort by ping.
Harder to find a specific server, but new players will have the load spread across the servers quasi-randomly, instead of flocking to the 10 servers who stuck themselves at the top of the list.
Oh, and yes for "Search Server" feature.
