« on: April 07, 2007, 07:22:14 am »
Hello,

I was Playing tremulous Today and i was trying out some console commands and managed to make a demo of a game i played using the /record command. it was a lesson in the power of spamming in general and i was going to post it on youtube but for a couple of facts:

- the video is in a crazy file format that hates me.
- i dont know how to cahnge the crazy file format
- i dont know how to even watch the video  :(

if someone could help it would be much appreciated.

my first post BTW...

Is it a .dm_69 file or similar?

That's not a video file but a demo file. You need to use /video to record a video. Use /video while playing the demo to "change the format". IIRC /video will give you an avi file that you can watch using most media players.

am i right in thinking that demo files record the movement and actions of players? and that they can be used to generate video?

They can be used to generate a video as described above. It's often better to record a demo then video it later rather than trying to video a game in real time as video encoding requires allot of processor time and unless you have a supercomputer the video would have skipped many frames resulting in a video file that plays much faster than the actual game was. A demo can be played back at the speed of the encoder.

in relation to the difference between a demo and a video is it possible to turn a demo into a video using the /video command while playing the demo back? and i tried to replay the demo using the command /demo spamftw (the name i gave the demo) and it says it cant find it. someone said that demos/screenshots are saved in the application data folder but i dont know how to reveal hidden folders (im using windows XP)

To view hidden files Create a folder on the Desktop called "test". Double-click on the folder to open it.

In the menu bar, select View->Toolbars and make sure that the "Address Bar" line is checked.

In the menu bar, select View->Details.

In the menu bar, select Tools->Folder Options...

In the window that pops up, select the "View" tab

There will be a list of options titled "Advanced Settings" In this list, do the following:
"Display the full path in the Address Bar" should be checked.

"Hide extensions for known file types" should be unchecked.

Click "OK"

Now, look in the address bar of the window. It should say something like "C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Desktop
