more ubuntu problems
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:06:07 am »
Hi all!
too bad that my first post is a problem...
I'm using Ubuntu edgy and I get to the point where I'm about to join a game (I've tried an Internet server and a local server with same problem) when the game crashes and I have a good old windows style crash (Ctrl+Alt+BS).
when it crashes I'm left with the desktop but with no mouse and at 640X480.  the last words on the terminal I could see were:
"stitched 184 LoD cracks
loaded 7526 faces,706 meshes, 1 trisurfs, 0 flares
killed"
can't scroll up to see more.
also looking some other posts most people say to check graphics drivers. mine are up to date (hey, I got beryl running on this geforce 2)
anyways, I'd be grateful for some help here

Try not using Beryl. Some accelerated games don't work properly in it.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

sorry I wasn't very clear. (I was in a hurry)
when I said I've got beryl working I meant that I've already gone through the process of getting some 3D support and my drivers should be ok. I've disabled beryl while im trying this.
basically i haven't got a clue what I'm looking at here. the game starts loading, the map loading bar gets to 90%, then I get a windows-like crash.
Has anyone got any idea where I should start looking. has anyone dealt with a problem like this before.

Run Tremulous from terminal and dump the output to a file, eg `tremulous &>dump.txt`. Then post the complete output here.

and if the game freezes so that you can't do anything other than ctrl+alt+baskspace, then try another shortcut instead - ctrl+alt+escape (the mouse cursor should change) and then click on the window that freezed (in case of fullscreen app just click whereever you want  ), what will kill the app whose window you've clicked on.
This should bring you back to your desktop (but if the game owned your mouse then after killing it you may have no control over the mouse, then you can restart X but there is a less 'agressive' way - just run the game again and turn it off right after it starts (of course this time with out writing it's output to a file).

geforce2 requires the legacy driver iirc, and since you're running beryl, i'm guessing that you're using the beta nvidia driver with GL_EXT_texture_from_pixmap. try installing the nvidia-glx-legacy package (and be sure to disable beryl first), and running tremulous.

Howbout buying hardware that doesn't require broken binary drivers?

Ok, tell us Oh Great One, what hardware are you talking about?

Last time I looked, it is only Nvidia that does a compile on the install system and does not bring any binary-only drivers.

Really? What's in the usr/src/nv/precompiled directory inside the nVidia Linux driver installer package then and how did they manage to squeeze OpenGL drivers to a dozen chipsets into 200KB of C? The compilation you see is kernel <-> binary driver interface module.  It must be compiled for the kernel because there's no real kernel API you can link to from precompiled module. BTW, ATi drivers do exactly the same thing.

And a short quote of nVidia software product manager:

It's so hard to write a graphics driver that open-sourcing it would not help

The only "real" graphics chipset vendor that DOES provide open-source drivers is Intel...

well, ati used to provide enough specs on their graphics cards under NDA to get an open source driver written for those cards, but they stopped.

I know, my big Linux box with Radeon 8500 uses MESA DRI r200 open-source driver.

not a lot of time on my hands at the moment, but thanks for the suggestions people.
when I get a chance I'll have a proper look at my system.
my favorite quote "Linux is only free if your time is worthless"

also I don't want to buy any new hardware, the_one, this computer is made of parts I've got from other pcs and whatever else I could get for free. the entire system has cost me nothing.
