What's the most balanced map?
« on: April 20, 2007, 10:24:08 pm »
Inquiring minds want to know:  Of all the publicly played and accepted (approximately) maps, what has the best gameflow to you, where Humans and Aliens play in a way that is challenging to both?

Notice I didn't say "where Humans and Aliens have relatively equal footing,"
because that would not be fair to the differences in play style.

Sound in, I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts.  And if I missed a map that is played regularly or semi-regularly, please accept my apology and post about what that map is and how it plays.

Love,
Pacra

P.S.  This is the most balanced PUBLIC map, not the most balanced map for clan matches.  That's quite a different category.

ATCS isnt really balanced
if humans get s2 and dont suck before aliens are s3 they cacn win
so difference in the winning stage is realy a handicap towards humans
:helmet:   :grenade: > :egg:  :barricade:  :acidtube:  :dragoon:  :basilisk:  :marauder:  :dretch:  :overmind:  :granger:
:tyrant:  :booster: > :turret:  :tesla:  :battlesuit:  :helmet:  :human:  :reactor:  :armoury:  :defcomp:  :telenode:
now metro
gives you a couple minutes to build before you can get to the fighting
also their are so many base opportunities even for s1

Arachnid2 is also a very balanced map, due to Tyrants and Adv. goons not being able to fully navigate the pipes leading to the alien base.

My vote is for Arachnid2 and Tremor because of the two-tier design. Having a basement or catwalk effectively doubles the number of routes there are on the map and makes humans more mobile. I wish more map makers would design with the two-tier layout in mind.

Also, there seems to be some obsession with ventilation tunnels. Those rarely become viable routes for getting to the alien base. Usually, they end up being camping points. I want more pipe bridges on maps and fewer ventilation ducts that make me feel like some tunnel rat in the Vietnam War.

I wouldn't have voted for it, but it is easily one of the most popular custom maps out there, so it should be in the list.

Niveus ftw! Maybe not balanced, but very fun.

tremor is not balanced, i cant remember a game where a competent human team has lost to an equally competent alien team, except for the time aliens glitchbuilt underneath....

point being its very easy for humans to win on tremor, especially in games with more than 6 ppl per team

Arachnid seems to me to be the most balanced map. Uncreation seems balanced, too, but I don't get to play it much since no one ever seems to have it in their rotation.

ATCS - just because it's symetrical doesn't mean it's balanced.

Arachnid is seriously tipped towards aliens.

Look at it this way:

If humans don't move, they get gooned within the first 4 minutes, then last for another 10 minutes if they managed to hide someone in the vents to rebuild.

If humans move under the stairs, they are permenatnly pinned down and under constant assault, their base will break.

If humans move to the top, they will last the longest, but the long hall leading to the boxroom is a home for marauders; they're fucking frag machines there; aliens will soon reach S3 and crack the human base open like an egg.

Tremor is all about alien building and defending the alien base.  Which a lot of players don't get alien building or defending the base.  Tremor is basically 10 aliens outside the human base while 1 guy goes through the basement and kills their whole base.   The alien default has 2 doors, which means you have a good opportunity for building and defense.    I can beat aliens on Tremor simply because aliens get spread out and don't defend.

Arachnid is HORRIBLE for aliens.  There are 0 doors on the whole map and it is wide open.  Humans don't have to do anything spectacular, just don't camp.  Most people think human building means 'find the best camping spot'.  It doesn't.  The default human base is spread out but easy to defend, as opposed to having a door to hide behind and spam out of.  Arachnid is one of the least ground orientated maps and that benefits humans with jetpacks.  A good human team should never lose Arachnid, regardless of alien defenders because it so big and open.  Big and open=ranged wins.

ATCS is balanced. It can tip either way.  The team that feeds least, wins.  I think people are so used to get steamrolled 1 way or the other that they don't see it as balanced.  ATCS is just so small that aliens get rushed by humans more frequently and they freak out.  I can win ATCS on either team.

Karith is one of the better maps.  It has open areas, tight areas, doors, long halls, and many base options.  Its balanced to me.  Its just that most humans don't go for the lift room.  Most maps, aliens get the lift room first.  But if humans get it, they can deny aliens the best base and force them into harder bases to defend.

ATCSZ Alpha is horrible to me, in general. Too easy for humans to camp in the default base.  Unlike ATCS, this map doesn't have 2 entrances to the base.  The vent doesn't count.

Ancient Remains, alien default is terrible.  Its a good map but I don't really like how big and confusing it is.  Maybe I could get used to it but smaller would be better if you ask me.

Flap, lol.  Whoever builds up top, wins.  Aliens can build away from their base better, so aliens have an advantage.

Gloom2Beta2, good map.  Its all up the human builders and defenders.  After that, humans just have to push out and have decent aim.  The alien base is pretty much good to go, with minor tweaks.  Its a rough map at first but I like now that I had time to play it a lot.

Nexus6, Niveus good maps.  Good balance either way.  Can't camp unless humans get the window room somehow.

The new Thermal is good.  Smaller is better.  Less ability to camp for any team.

UTCS swings to hard towards humans.  Its okay but nothing really spectacular about it, other than the catwalks.  Aliens don't have much options for a base.  No doors on the map either.

Pulse, urg.  Good map, just too painful to navigate.

Meep.  Good map, too easy for humans to camp though behind portals or sky camp.

Uncreation, good map.  Too easy for humans to get camped in by aliens but once humans get out of the base, the balance goes the other way.  I guess that makes it balanced.

Transit, good map.  Has lag issues.  Egg spam is a pain but I rather egg spam than dealing real defenses.  Most aliens don't know where to build on this map, but there are some nice places.

Hamunaptra, I hated this the map at first.  Now, I consider it fun.  Its big but its simple to navigate. It requires alien builders to be on the ball and so most alien teams lose.

The best alien spot on Karith is eaasily the dark staircase.

I like builders like you.  A nade takes out everything on the first floor.  Nothing but long halls leading the base so humans can pin you down.  Larger aliens can't navigate the base to defend it.  I love luci, have you met her?

Lift room may be ideal for humans, but for alien building, it's easily destroyed at s3.  Luci+jetpack+nade with even an inkling of backup from outside will enter the grate and destroy the alien base.

The dark staircase is a death trap.  Too close to the human base for comfort, all structures too close together making for an easy luci or nade target.  Rants will get annhilated in the small, long hallway; if you're flanked from upstairs, the base is as good as gone.

The best base on Karith for aliens is the default base, which is farthest from the human base; good players know that distance for aliens is an advantage.  If you're a good builder, you can put trappers at a 45 degree angle from the entrances, well away from luci or nade hits.  The OM is placed near the soda machine.  Other structures should be built using common sense, with at least two eggs above original OM spot so they're out of harm's way.  You now have an easily tyrant-defendable base. and humans have to run the proverbial gauntlet to get there.

Karith is definitely the most balanced map for me, especially if the aliens have a few smart builders, like the guy above me posted about.  I love that it has a bunch of wide-open areas and a bunch of dark, cramped ones too.  The hardest part is definitely finding the ideal human base that won't get Gooned, but the real solution, I think, is to find the alien base early and keep massive pressure on it.
