I hesitate to ask but...
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:15:02 am »
Ok, I'm a newb to this game..only been playing a few days.  I did some searching around but didn't see an answer to these two questions, so I'll ask them here.

1.  Is there anyway to set Tremulous so that if I come across a map I don't have it will automatically download?

2.  Are there any blueprints or anything to any of the maps that I could study to gain a bit more insight into the layout of some of the more complex ones?

Thanks all, I'm really enjoying the game thusfar.

1. Yes.

Pressing esc - options auto downloads enabled would do.  But the maps would download a bit slowly.

This has instructions on how to enable HTTP downloads.

2. There have been attempts to make blueprints of maps I think.  I'm not sure on this one.  But most maps don't.  Just browse the map with a human or a dretch a few times and you'll get used to it.

1. type cl_allowdownload 1 in console (the ` button next to the 1)
2. Not that I know of, but you can make your own local server and just explore the maps by yourself.
here is the love?

Most of the maps are fairly linear, and easy to learn after about 5 games.
I memorized pulse_102 in about 4, so anyone can.
As for the autodownloads, there speeds are glacial unless you use www downloads, you will need tjw's client, and to keep people on the trem site, here are the instructions from the DS page:
Quote from: "DS"
A guid is a Gamer's Unique Identification Device, or something similar.

What a GUID does is allow you to have admin levels, and allows many client fixes.

How to download & apply backport:
-Go to this link: http://trem.tjw.org/backport/
-Select the operating system you have. (Win32 = Windows)
-Download it.
-Replace your original Tremulous executable with that file.

How to enable auto-download:
-In a server, press Escape.
-Press Options.
-Below the name space, press the "off" next to Auto-download. That will make it "on", or enabled.

Readme file of the backport
Quote from: "readme file"
This is a backport of some important additions to ioquake3 to Tremulous 1.1.0.

A backport is required because the current Tremulous client built from SVN
is no longer compatible with the 1.1.0 data files and vms.

This is based on the Tremulous SVN version 755 with the following additions:

* cl_guid (because I'm a shameless self promoter)
* May 8, 2006 security fix for COM_StripExtension()
http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2006-May/045906.html
* WinXP SP2 NX-extension fix
* June 2, 2006 security fix
http://www.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Full-Disclosure/2006-06/msg00112.html
* R1CH's Alt-Tab fix (you need to set win_allowAltTab 1 for this to work)
* win32 builds add a "home path" in /Documents and Settings
* cURL support for HTTP/FTP downloads. cl_allowDownload and cl_wwwDownload
both need to be set to 1 (the server also needs to be patched and configured
for this to work).
* OpenAL sound tracking fix (bug 2893)
* added cl_guidServerUniq. When set to non-zero a different cl_guid is sent
to each server you connect to to prevent guid theft by malicious server
admins.

I strongly recommend backing up your existing binaries in case these
don't work out.
How to turn on HTTP downloads
Either in the autogen.cfg or ingame. cl_allowDownload and cl_wwwDownload both need to be set to 1

Not sure why but in Ubuntu operating systems users might also need to modify cl_cURLLib "libcurl.so" to become cl_cURLLib "libcurl.so.3"

If you wish to reinstall, or switch computers with tremulous, you only need to keep the Qkey file to keep your admin status.
It can be found with a quick file search. On linux it's located in ~/.tremulous/base/ And windows and mac will have their equivilants.

Thanks everyone!  I'm loving this game, and I'm sure I'll be out of my noobish phrase within a few more days of playing.  :)

Check out http://mercenariesguild.net/index.php?option=com_openwiki&Itemid=46&id=documentation_project for help with binds (keys that you set to do certain actions), some building, a link to the tremulous manual, and other usefull things.

@Paradox; I played pulse recently, and, it is actually quite easy to get around. I think we're one of the few people who know how to get to the control room when aliens have the complex on lockdown though.

staveoffzombies,

You can also get a lot of the maps ahead of time at
http://www.mercenariesguild.net/base/
You can download individual maps or you can get the 344MB MG Map Pack!  The map pack includes everything you might possibly find on a public server (unless I've missed one :P ) so it might be overkill.  They can be fun to explore though.

You may find this map list a little easier to parse :)

Thanks for all the help.

After playing the game now for around 20 or so hours I'm starting to find my way around and develop a style.  I've definitely become an alien player...human is 'ok' but the uniquiness of each alien evolution is just a blast to play with.  And the first time I became a Tyrant and staring mowing people down in a base attack was pure chaotic joy.
 :D

Actually, I'll take this opportuniy to ask a couple more 'noobie' questions.

1.  With the dretch, if I jump at someone and don't hit them in the face...but manage to land on top of their head...does that count as a head shot?

2.  With the dragoon...when pouncing...do using arrow keys mid-pounce affect the damage of the pounce?

Thanks again, I'm in love with this game....sexually.... :P

1. if you are looking at his head, yes. otherwise you have just given the human a rather intersting hat.

2. i dont know, not familiar with the game mechanics (is there a thread about that?)

Known as Hydra ingame,
1227 apparently, can't change that now...

No, dragoon pounce damage cannot be controlled after the pounce is released.

But; here's a neat little trick that works on long halls.

Pounce, and hole space once you releace, you'll bounce untill you hit a wall.

Also, to avoid pouncing teammates, look away. Pounce damage is only delivered to targets in your line of sight.

Actually, you could just charge up a new pounce in midair and release it when you land, with soe practice you can jump along the whole train stretch in transit in 4 or 3 pounces! It is incredibly fast.. Just dont try it too much on servers with full ff (no dretchpunt= dead dretches.)

There's a lot of good help here for staveoffzombies. I just read an article on the Mercenaries Guild site that was saying that there are a lot of posters who would rather flame and deride new players for asking seemingly simple questions like these. Congratulations to the mature posters here on bringing sanity back to this forum.

Heh, i just looked everywhere, and thought about how to get there. In about 4 games, i knew how to get past locked doors, where each vent was, etc.
