To be honest I'm not comfortable about UrT 4. It's standalone in the sense that it claims not to use any Q3 assets. However, there are things that are directly copied from the Q3 pk3s. I think the reasoning behind this is that it's permissible to redistribute Q3 assets with Q3 mods, which UrT still is. I'm unclear if this is still OK when uses in a standalone context.

The code is all still closed source and it isn't convenient to install as it needs a separate "engine" installer. The point of this is basically to evade the GPL as far as I can see. This much is all legal I think, but only just. The one area where I'm not so sure about is with the Q3 EULA on which the mod SDK is bound (and thus the closed source UrT), which states that it may only be used with "Quake III Arena". I'm not convinced that the ioq3 fork that is distributed for UrT still constitutes "Quake III Arena".

It's all a bit grey and murky in my opinion.

Closed source Counterstrike clone built to evade the GPL? Let this one sink to the depths.

All hail the great Timbo for opening Tremulous!  :D

Thanks for enlightening us Timbo, what about Padworld ?

The game is just released as ioq3-standalone and it's pretty well designed.

Yeah, WoP has had the source out for a while. I played it when it was still in development, lots of people don't run the mod but use the PadWorld maps and console in Quake 3, it's so ba.
Code: [Select]
Linux: ~/.tremulous/base/
Mac: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Tremulous/base/
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base\

Something I've noticed is that compared with Trem, both WoP and UrT run terribly on my Macbook (OS X 10.4.9). I don't know why, but Trem runs at 1280x800 at max easily, and only occasionally drops frames. UrT and WoP (especially WoP) run poorly even at 800x500.

Dude,
Good to know (I also use a MacBook running 10.4.9). What peripherals are you using? I've got a 22" external monitor and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Oh, on the off topic: Trem rules! And if those games run crappy or are barely legal, then let me say it again. Trem rules!

Ugh, I very very highly doubt that what they are doing is allowed by the GPL licence.
