Smallest map playable?
« on: April 27, 2007, 06:15:44 pm »
I wanted to bring this up because on the modded server we often have very few people typically we end up playing ATCS because it is the smallest map. My question is, what is the smallest map that would work well in Tremulous?

I remember two player maps from Quake 3, they were very fun. Is it possible to do the same in Tremulous? If not two player, four player?

Are there any good small custom maps already? Smaller than ATCS even?

i bet by the end of the day someone will build you one.

a square box with spawn points and some simple walls/obstacles for ducking / a base?

sounds like 10 minutes of mapping work...

I'll make some mini maps this weekend when i finish my my current map.

small maps are easy. But the essence of tremulous lies in teamwork. so 3 vs 3 at minimum and 5 vs 5 by preference.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

risujin make us one :D
quake3 had testbox ( a small cube) . tremulous lacks this. :D

It is atcs with both its file and map size.
(I always devmap atcs)

utcs is another one but it is not as good as atcs + it has no sky which is depressing

Okay, when i get home i'll upload my pushcannon map for you to fuck around with.  it's i giant cube with a cannon that fires striaght up for something like 3000 game units.  I wouldn't suggest going in the cannon unless you have a bsuit on. humans (bsuit included) fit in, dretch and granger fit in the entrance.  if a non-bsuit launches himself he will die from the fall, but flight lasts for a long ass time.

I'll add a bunker of sorts to protect the alien / human bases but that's all i'll add to it.  I'll shrink the cube as well since it's like 5000 gu^3 ... or maybe i wont.

I won't be getting home until 10pm pacific time.  I've got happy hour to get drunk at 5:30, then I'll attempt to make the changes.  I'll definitely upload it tomorrow if not tonight.

This was the first map I made in radiant.

Does light armor survive?
Hmm, maybe with a jetpack...

Back on subject, the bases should be far enough that you could evolve in your base (Flap has this problem, gotta walk some).
Other than that, nothing stops you from making a "Basic Tactical Combat Simulator"

I'm always surprised at the people who like playing MG Crate, which is pretty much what it is, one big crate.

No I'm not talking about a testing map. I'm just wondering whether there could be a Tremulous equivalent to the tiny Quake 3 2-player maps. In other words, can you make a good map smaller than ATCS?

Crate is far larger than what I have in mind ... and definitely not any good.  :-?

Gotcha.  I'll see what I can do.  You want small, but similar game play to atcs.

You gotta keep in mind that the smaller you make a map, the easier it is on humans, up until they point where they can actually camp and attack at the same time. Favouring the base layout / paths to aliens might be an idea.

The weird thing is;

I made a map where a suit would be launched 3000eu (editor units), I launched, I fell, I hit the ground, and I walked away with only 20hp gone.

Then I made a map where a suit would be launched 7000eu, and walked away suffering the same end result; 20hp loss.

I haven't experimented with numbers more extreme then that, but it seems as though the fall damage has a max for humans.

Thats what I was trying to say...
Now go buy light armor and try it, you'll lose only 30 hp.
Maximum fall damage is 100, it is either non-locational or applied to legs...
Granger also has max fall damage of 10.

Not my map, but a very small one.  If either side gets their base wiped out, they are doomed.  Hallways are roughly the size of niveus's smaller ones.  It is dual level and has elevators and ladders, so it can get very interesting--tyrants have a hard time getting up, but a human base that abandons the bottom is screwed at A s3, upon which it becomes an adv goon party.

in case you didn't see it yet I uploaded my Push Cannon map.

It's smallish with sheltered bases.  And then a giant gimmick between the two.  I think it would work well with your mod.

I got this map just to mess around and its pretty funny.
Grangers fly higher then dretches though i think.

I was having fun wallwalking all the way up and trying to drop straight into the cannon.
I finally got it and just bounced up and down for a few minutes.
