OpenGL unloadable (issue is peculiar)
« on: May 05, 2007, 01:45:27 am »
A week ago i had a second screen added to my video card, and the settings were set so that evrything (icons, start menu, etc.) starts in that screen. The other was simply for additional space and multitasking.

When i tried loading Trem on that screen the message below appeared. Now that first try was on the GUID. After that i switched to the original game icon and it worked.....but being the dumb@$$ i am i tried to tinker with the resolution sooooo when the game was changing to those settings the same message came up and Tremulous was totally unusable.

I had to re-install Tremulous and try and salvage some of the maps and mods left over. Soon after i downloaded a new GUID and when i tried to use it, same message appeared.

The original Trem icon works fine but i cant get a GUID working(including some binds too) soooo i decided to come to you guys.

I hope you can help in some way.

i have a windows XP (none of that Vista ;P) and here is the error message:

do you have drivers from nvidia/ati/intel (whichever video card you have), or just the drivers that come with windows?

Isn't there some reference to the game being based upon OpenGL?

Yeah, you're right, but FAQ's purpose is to answer "frequently asked questions", and the problem with opengl under windows is the most frequently asked question on this forum

Hmm, I was under the impression that exactly that was done in the FAQ

EDIT: Heck even the Error is there, verbatim.

Well the double screen thing that i have uses a program called NVIDIA, so I assume that's what you mean, other than that i don't think any new drivers have been put in. [/quote]

Ok, then "on the double" you head on over to nvidia.com and grab yourself a copy of the drivers, install them and have a look-see.

Q: I get the error 'GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem' when I try to run Tremulous!
A: This error is caused by the game not being able to detect your Open GL drivers for your graphics card.  There are two things you can try to resolve this issue:

-If you are using your vendors graphic card drivers (i.e. Asus, Abit), try using your manufacturer's graphic card drivers (i.e. ATI, Nvidia)
-If you are using the manufacturer's graphic card drivers, try using the vendors card drivers.
-If the above steps fail, try uninstalling your graphic card drivers completely, rebooting, then reinstalling the latest set of drivers, rebooting a second time, and trying to run Tremulous again.

Note:  ATI's Windows Vista Beta 2 drivers DO NOT INCLUDE OPEN GL.  There is currently no known work around until ATI updates their drivers with open gl support.

(besides that note at the bottom, which is temporary and has nothin' to do with microsoft's drivers) there is written that either vendor's drivers or manufacturer's drivers can cause that well known OGL problem. But majority of graphics drivers that come with windows are written by microsoft and not by vendors or manufactirers of gfx chips/cards/whatever.

So my point was that there should be clearly stated that the problem is caused also by microsoft's graphics drivers, which lack support for OpenGL, and one should not use those drivers if wants to play Trem.
That's all.

But, whatever... to be honest it's not my business, all in all.

hmm. that means that you have a good driver, but seems like Trem has problem with it when using 2 screens.
Or maby just the driver allows OpenGL acceleration only on one of the screens?

Anyway, I'm not an expert with that kind of stuff, so I can't help more...

Hahahah Tomek-k is completely right, last night I reversed the screens so all the software is centered on the original one, and now the GUID works perfect.

I want to thank you all since I know this topic has been repeaded a few times, and thnx for the time you wasted to read this.

hehe, it's ok - the topic a bit different then the others
my question about the FAQ was rather related to the windows' ogl problem in general than to your question - I just used your thread to get the answer :P

just run tremulous in windowed mode (tremulous.exe +set r_fullscreen 0), then it should work
