Wierd kind of lag with an average ping
« on: May 18, 2007, 01:47:25 pm »
Recently I downloaded tremulous again after a break (it always worked perfectly for me in the past with v1.1) and now I suddenly get this weird kind of lag where sometimes everything works just fine for a few seconds and then I get this lag where if I press W for an amount of time, I don't move forward for 1 or 2 seconds (in worst cases) and then after I release it (or while if I press longer), it starts to move forward for a longer time then I pressed W.
This same problem I have with every button in the game as soon as I enter a server (including the escape button). If I shoot for example with the Lucifer cannon it begins charging pretty much on time and then when I release the mouse button it is a random time before it actually fires and sometimes overheats even if I pressed the button only for a pretty short time (not nearly enough time to let it overheat). But with the rifle, the shooting animation seems pretty on time, but the bullets only appear after some time.
With the aliens I just have the same movement problems as with the humans but I just miss a lot.
But the rest of the players seem to be displayed as usual, they all continue to move and shoot like they should at all times and my fps is a constant 90 and ping is below 100 most of the time though seems to flux a lot to between 100-200.
This effect seems to differ per server for some reason (some servers where I have a higher ping, the lag is less).

I run windows xp x64, AMD Athlon 64 3500, double SLI GeForce 6600 GT and have a good adsl connection and the rest of the online games work just fine for me.

(ps. sorting servers on ping in the server list also doesn't work for me, never has, common problem?)

If you have com_maxfps set to 0, that can cause lag issues on some compies.  Other than that, "Idaknow".

Set com_maxfps to 125 or so and see how your FPS is, 64-bit XP is pretty crappy and your video drivers for it might suck, find out.

Sort by ping with the tjw client: http://trem.tjw.org/backport/
Code: [Select]
Linux: ~/.tremulous/base/
Mac: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Tremulous/base/
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base\

Ping-sort doesn't work for anyone, it has been fixed but just isn't part of the game yet.

You have lag, its not a framerate problem. I'm assuming since you know your lag you have lagometer going. See any spikes? I used to get this same kind of issue when i was playing dialup... also quite possible someone else on your connection is getting something while your playing.. make sure your connection is clean, no one else is on, close your other programs and see if that doesn't fix it..

I have fixed most of the problems, it appeared that memturbo 4's CPU rocket for active programs feature was causing the trouble since tremulous runs in 2 windows the other window got too less CPU power and the other one had more then enough, which led to some strange stuff. The ping fluxes also went away.

Now I have disabled every option in memturbo but now I get a stutter when I move, but during the stutter, everyone else continues moving/shooting like they should, fps continues like it should and ping stays stable (always below 100 with no fluxes) and the shooting is still a bit delayed. This problem seems to vary on what part of the map I am and what map I am playing on.

The max fps has no effect on this and I am sure I am the only one using the connection when I am mostly trying.

(ps. if anyone ever runs into the problem where the server list says "Getting info for -1 servers", this can be caused by a problem with the default gateway. Happened to me while I was trying some stuff, type "route -f" in the commandline and click repair in the network connections window and it was fixed for me. Just in case this may ever be useful to someone ;) )
