How to fix Volcano
« on: May 19, 2007, 05:00:08 am »
OK, so Volcano is a neat idea for a map, but everyone complains about it because it's so feverishly unbalanced in the humans' favour.

I suggest that the blue force field that currently surrounds the summit be replaced by a rock barrier, so that the human base is located not at the very top of the volcano, but just inside the mouth. As well, most of the platform should be thinned, so that humans only have a limited area in which to build the bulk of their base. There should be an area opposite the human base which is shielded by rock, that the aliens can hide behind.

This is an improvement because it will allow aliens to wallwalk up to the human base, as well, the thinner platform will limit the amount of control the humans can have over the summit.

Ramps instead of elevators.  Ramps with limited cover.  At least a ramp from the last floor to the top.

Take out a floor or  2 from the middle and make the top bigger.

SST uses a special layout with humans starting on top and aliens on bottom.  By default, they both start on opposite sides in the middle with a few doors between eachother.  If your experience is on SST complain to them for their layout.

NOTE: I am not the mapper, but I have loaded it on a private server.

SST has two layouts for volcano, one is "default" in which the humans start on top and have the advantage until aliens hit S3 and any weakness in the skybase will send it falling from +goons. The other layout has aliens start at the top and gives them the advantage but they need to move their OM before humans hit S2 or it'll die, I think this layout has better gameplay at the beginning but either way whichever team has bad builders or feeders is going to loose horribly.

SST is the only server I have seen with it on the rotation and my god is it stupid. All the people do is jump off the edge while spamming their rainbow colored binds or they camp on the top with an MD. It's actually quite annoying considering most of the sst players are noobs and vote for it during a good map, like Niveus.

-Oh and yes, I realize this was just SST and not the normal map layout but there is really no way to make this map have good gameplay.

@TinMan: has anyone ever tried it with the Humans and Aliens in the blue and red bases at map start? That might be interesting. Is that hard to reconfigure?

Anger, play it on a server that's not infested with newbs, it's a good map with good balance.

There are no good maps on SST|, every game is ruined by retarted builders and newbs.

No need to start flaming SST.

Volcano needs to have more then a straight hole down into the lava.  More bumps, crevices and juts from the wall would be nice.  have the floor blend into the mountain and not dug straight in.  Keep the skybox non electric, and make ramps carving into the volcano instead of elevators.  Also less vents would be nice.  The ground floor area of the volcano is quite nice, I'm talking about the bottom exits to the elevators.  It has a few bumps and jagged walls which should be extended throughout the map.

Instead of bridges maybe have a large rope bridge that has burned away in some spots, if not a large piece of broken rock that halfway blocks the volcano.  From the top, maybe make the wall a view of a city that is about to die at the end.

And just for fun, at endgame make lava shoot out and overflow.  :D

Oh and I'm not an experienced mapper so take my suggestions with the weight of a grain of sand.

The main problem with Volcano is that it's nearly impossible to kill jettards as alien without suiciding, especially before s3. When the entire human team is floating over the lava,  it makes getting the kills for s3 especially difficult.

One solution may be to have some sort of random damage triggers for jettards in the volcano. Don't know quite how that would work, though.

Heh, science!

Hot air from the volcano rises.  Because it is warmer, it is less dense, providing less for the jetpack to sit/rise on.  So in theory, they should sink.

Who has a jetpack and is willing to float over a volcano to test this?

A jetpack doesn't work by 'floating'...

Best quote.  I like the idea of Volcano but it needs more work.
