Communication Thread!! Teamspeak, ventrilo and teamchat bind
« on: April 12, 2006, 01:19:59 am »
Well if you thought this thread was about communication you were right. I think it would be a good idea for some of the bigger servers to have a "this server only teamspeak/ventrilo server" wich would have a channel for humans, and a channel for aliens.  I think this would be a great idea to help games be alot more interesting because typing things out can be a bit slow.

Given Tremulous' crossplatform nature, I recommend going for Teamspeak since it is much more Linux friendly than Ventrilo.

Unknown? do you play on beer garden or AKKA? I forgot wich since o alternate between both servers. But if you could do that it would be a nice thing.

_________________________________________________ ________________

On a side note, would it be possible to maybe intagrate some sort of voice chat with for each team in the client?  I know quake 3 did not have it, But Maybe the devs could find somthing on Sourceforge website that they could include somehow.

But if teamspeak or ventrilo is the only way to go then i guess that would be fine.

after all timing can be critical, and if you're base is being attacked and you take 5 to 15 second dealing with typos to properly send out teh message , That can be the differance between a dead base or a successfull defence.

But communication was the main point of the thread, i might change the title.

I think somone else made a thread about some sort of team quickchat menu, are they going to implement somthing like that into the game, besides that cfg workaround?

Regarding voice chat integration: if you want a GPL compatible library there isn't really much too chose from. Using an Asterisk system can work, but Asterisk is really more suited to traditional phone stuff than gaming (bad moderation controls).

The beer garden has a few teamspeaks and a ventrillo server.. Although I think the ventrillo server may be broke.. I hate ventrillo so I dont plan to fix it but here is the info for the TS:

It would be great if there was a Local chat option. It would  send messages to people within certain radius AND within line of sight. It should use another color.
When I see someone saying "we need a Turret here", and I'm two maps away, I really don't care. I won't get back in time anyway. Similarly, "tyrant under stair" is not very helpful if a map is full of stairs, so it would be good to have a local chat option.
------------------
It would also be great to have names assigned to parts of map, like Q3F does. When when you send a message, it glues your location to it, for example:
(elevator room) We need an engineer.
(initial human spawn) There's alien base here
(lower tunnels) Tyrants coming
I suppose it would require editing the maps, but it works great if done properly, and just placing location markers shouldn't be very hard.
--------------------
Something as simple as "We're attacking human base" global message when enemy base is being damaged, (opposite to Our base is under attack) would help coordinating attacks. Additional information is good.
----------------------
Interface, related to communication:
- when you have an option to select construction kit/granger, the interface should display number of builders on team and unused build points.
- when you're choosing buildings from list, the interface should show amount of these buildings your team has, so you can easily check how many eggs are there.
f you have a demo of ass-kicking basilisk playing against experienced opponents, ESPECIALLY in later stages, send it to me.

Build points are already displayed (bottom right of screen).

As for coordinating attacks, a quick chat menu is more likely to help there.

Local messages and area naming would be cool.
