Early Tremulous Notes
« on: May 24, 2007, 06:00:37 am »
When I went rooting around for early images to post in that "other" thread I came across these old notes Timbo I jammed on.

From 8-15-2001, enjoy:

Aliens :
They don't have to be super diverse, they can still retain alot of upgrades to speed/health/attack on their base stats.

Looping or triggered animations for buildables, ie : You get too close to the hivemind it quivers around or strikes out an arm at you. A nice addition would be these structures that "defend" themselves. Even just cause damage when you touch them regardless if it has some animation.

Eggs bulge when spawning.

2 egg models, one ceiling, one floor depending on where you lay it. Yes this is a serious idea. Would add so much atmosphere to see dangling egg cases from ceiling.

Sandworm inspired structures. Basically an alien encasement that is placed on the floor or ceiling. Some kind of organic creature with mandibles, etc. lurches out when someone comes near. Would be scary to line a hallway with these and they all come shooting out, rhythmically snapping. Think barnacle creatures in HL?

An alien that can create a short burst of electricity like an electric eel or the tesla turret in the human section.

Maybe no healing objects/class. Or I guess they heal on the creep already? That's cool then. Just a slower rate of heal than the medic station because aliens would have more spots to heal.

A type of object that can be used as an organic barbed wire to protect areas. Webbing is the first thing that comes to mind but that's too spidery.

Humans :

Disintegrator gun, futuristic chainsaw, stun prod, gauss gun, etc. Sure alot of these are other weapons in disguise and it's getting increasingly hard to make original weapons in a FPS, but it can be done. With a combination of damage, the style of the weapon, ammo/reload times, area effect, etc. I'd really like to see a gun that shoots glue that can slow aliens down AND be set on fire. But thats probably hard. Maybe a secondary attack weapon that is an energy shield, you think your going to be attacked you raise this shield for 2 seconds and it deflects or has health. Maybe a remote stun gun, it stuns the alien for 2 seconds and needs to be killed with a different weapon.

Tracers in any machine gun weapons.

Tesla "turret." It's a futuristic tesla tower device that sends out arcs of electricity at targets. Sure it's basically a rail tower in disguise but it could look sooo cool and attack multiple targets. Make it so these are expensive and cover a range that normally 2-3 mg turrets would do.(Ironically after I wrote this Strogg War for Q2 was released with an identical design.)

Float mines - small mines that float in the air like versions of the old water mines with spikes.

An absolute must is a battlesuit type of class. Be it robot or suit for human, just something badass. Also think it would be kind of cool to make it geared towards melee, make it on par with the strongest alien. Would mix it up a little bit instead of having every class get a better gun. Just an idea. ( Note this would really be the last stage in armor upgrades, just like a complete kit.)

No medic class, just a healing tube/station that can be built. You get it in , it heals you. Make these expensive. A human would stand in a column of energy and slowly recharge, aliens could destroy this and temporarily cripple humans.

Misc items ideas - adrenaline kit, removes stamina effects, auto-recharge? Limited grenades - want to seriously avoid a spamfest.
Blast kits - remote controlled explosions.

Finally, the earliest shot I can find, those are teleporters and the mushrooms you see littering the background - they shoot sawblades. Sawblades.

ok, i have to admit,
I want the HL barnacle style alien building!

and some of those other ideas are good 2,
you guys should reference back to your old notes
when you are looking for new stuff to add because
these were some good ideas!

And and melee (not chainsaw) bsuit ftw!!
That would pwn so much! o.0
(Adv. Bsuit?)

Also remote mines, explosives
would be awesome as well...
less deathmatch, more cool gadgets!
And a buyable adrenaline kit... ^_^

Those are great human ideas but the aliens need
to be scarier and creepier with the ability
to be very clever in using their classes and structures.
(buildings that eat people and don't need creep
would be a nice start)

hmm... make the humans weaker but give them better
tools to make it up?

So much for the stream of consciousness reply...

mainly i would love to see more thinking involved
in tremulous... make it a balance of reactions and strategy.
Right now it's almost all reactions except for base building,
working as a group, and not feeding.

Oo land mines, remote controlled explosives... set a few those around a human base.. w8 till a tyrant goes over it ... bam... 1hit kill woot :D. remote controlled explosives could be very useful. one human runs into the base while a chainsuit covers. the human w/ bomb kit would drop a few of those explosives.. run back to base and detonate while the unsuspecting rants retreat back to base, scared of the chainsuit, but then the rants wouldn't realize they stepped on these explosives which were about to explode... ka-BAM!!! 2 rants die explosives and the human that setoff the explosions gets 2 kill while sitting on the medstation.. the chainsuit buddy who covered would soon be pissed off that he got kill stolen from :P. well to sum it up.. i like the bombs and a melee bsuit woah... have like a retractable claw that does 275dmg but would move at a slow speed... would make up for the strong dmg.

I said we need mines and remote explosives, but no...
People have probably been asking for them for the past 5 years.
That, and flying aliens.
