Camping Suggestion
« on: June 06, 2007, 07:22:35 pm »
Well, after playing tremulous for a while I've noticed a lot of camping. I think the big problem is the 2 minute evo/credit gain, If Tremulous took that out, camping would be useless and people would have to go out and earn their credits.

Like?

Are you sure it's camping, and not defending? I mean, it's okay for some humans to stay back and defend the base, but if they're all camping in the base, then it's just a matter of time before they die, because you can't win as a human by camping.

This is actually a pretty balanced game when it comes to camping, it's tough to do against a skilled alien team.

I'll admit most of the camping I've seen could count as defending.  (Goon's outside door)  However I believe a decent team could break through.  I agree that the 2 minute evo/creds may affect it however I see this is a good point in the game. A sort of reward for not feeding.

Besides unless your campers are gonna go out with a rifle/helm/larmor vs goons (not that hard but it takes skill) or a basi they'll have to wait four minutes.  Even then for aliens thats only gonna get you a mara and for humans at 350 credits you can get:

:helmet: and a FEW s1 weapons. So if you want to be useful past s2 by getting creds/evo by camping you would have to wait 6 minutes.  I think by then you would be getting pretty bored I know I would.

I think camping is a legitimate strategy in some cases.  I hate noobs with no creds and feed the enemy.  I tell them to camp till they can at least afford some sort of armor.  They tell me to go the hell and stop be a camping noob....

I hate it when a tyrant is camping right outside my base, kill-whoring.

And then has the audacity to accuse ME of camping, when what they want is me to feed them more, so they can show off a nice score.

Human side camping seems worse on servers with share/donate.  People camp in order to spread money amongst the weaker members of their team.

Isn't it quicker to kill to get credits?  I usually play on Fragify.com share is on there but we don't have any camping greater then other servers I've played on.

Actually, you can. Just let the alien team waste their evos and then attack their base.

That only works if your facing a team of idiots.  Campers need to remember this.  While your getting creds every 2 minutes so are the aliens!

It is quicker to kill to get credits, if you can kill to get credits with a rifle ;)

If you need a bsuit and flamer to get kills, it will take you quite a while to get to where you can actually get kills.  Stronger members of the team would rather have you getting kills and contributing to the team, so a stronger member of the team killwhoring and sharing the credits would benefit the team in this respect.  The weaker member would have less time in which they are just feeding.

Basically, in addition to the leveling up benefit of killwhoring, there is the team's money supply that benefits from killwhoring.  It's more likely to happen if you have even more incentives to do it.

Getting kills with a rifle is not that hard.  Also me and many other regulars don't give you evo's or creds unless we know you or your doing pretty decent just down on your luck.  I'm not going to give a noob my hard earned cash so he can waste it on a stream of useless basi road blocks.

Yea, the mass of camping (on both sides, I hate camping the humies doors as alien as much as camping base as human) is actually kind of killing the game for me.

Aliens complain about camping humans yet insist on sitting right outside the base waiting for someone to come out. I can't even count the number of times I tell my team to back off because I don't want to play "assault the campers" for half an hour. Unfortunately too many players get a huge boner over camping and it basically forces the humans do either camp or feed like crazy.

Yes, they can break through, sometimes a lot easier then they imagine, but it takes a group of skilled players working together to do so, and that's more rare then it should be.

Of course, on the other end, even a human team that's winning will rarely move far from base unless a few of their better players have allready done most of the work. If they would man up and attack instead of sitting at the end of some long hallway killing the rushing retard dretches, humans would find themselves winning a hell of a lot more often.

I could go on because it's a much more complicated issue then most people know. I won't though because I have better things to do but both sides need to tone down on camping. I won't say it's not a viable strategy at very specific times, but too many people use that excuse to sit around on a turret for half the game.

i really dont care about public games, go to SST or D*S, theres always some random noob running around outside of the bases.

But what really pisses me off, is evo/cred camping in match play. ESPECIALLY the ones that camp with dretch for 2 mins then share all the evos 2 one dude so he can go goon. when im human, nothing in match-play pisses me off more than that situation.

Share off does stop this from occuring, but instead they all just wait for evos for mara/goon and they camp _even longer_

i really would like to see this creds/evos per 2 minutes go, unless youre an active builder actually building something.

This could still be abused, but hopefully a team of well-coordinated humans in match-play could take out those build spamming grangers before they have the opportunity to evolve.

i don't see why people would camp in a match, all the good players i know admit that camping (as humans) puts you at a disadvantage. i remember playing a match a while ago against some of the best players of the time, and we barely camped as humans (and they didn't camp at all, but they were much better than us, and we still managed to nearly win the game we were humans). i think it's just players (even those who consider themselves to be 1337) being dumb, when i just started playing trem (a couple months after standalone), games on transit would start with the whole human team rushing the alien base to take pressure off the builder and force the aliens to eggspam instead of going on the offensive, now aliens just feed off the unprotected base until turrets are up and the game degrades to the usual campfest.

If youre up against a team of good dretch, all they gotta do is camp, and when you go to attack and are sitting there trying to get that angle where the tube doesnt hit you but you hit it, they run up and hs you and the next one finishes you off. Its trivial to use that strategy and own at it, until you can get goons and camp your ass off at the humans' base.

first of all, you shouldn't be playing all your matches on atcs, that's just lame. second of all, there's nothing dretches can do about 3 humans lined up side by side in the front entrance.

then you have 2 humans go in while 2 others are ready to aim at their feet, worst case scenario you end up even in kills.

so you'd make this timed evo thing go for matches (which we agree occur less often than regular games?)

doesn't that make your post contradictory? since you claim that you don't care if this occurs in public games, why would you implement a change that affects all public games?
here is the love?

no need to go up the ramps, there's a clear shot at the om from the floor, if you don't kill the guy who gets the killing blow on the om, he's gonna have enough for md+larmor when he gets back to his base, and then it's pretty much impossible for a dretch to do anything.

if you move the om back, a rifle will barely get any shots on the tip, and you still will have to go up the ramps for the eggs...

i find the loss of intrest in this thread disappointing... imnho, there is no use for this feature other than annoyance.

@repent: i claim i dont care about public games, so if it fucks with public games i really dont care. thats what i mean, which does not make my post contradictory...your post; however, just makes no sense.
