Only left-ear headphone works on PC

Every, and I mean EVERY, set of headphones I have work perfectly with all but my PC. For some reason, when I plug them into the headphone jack on the front of the computer, only the left earpiece will work. Does anybody know some way to fix this? It bugs me when I play any game, but mostly Tremulous and Jane's F/A-18 Simulator; those games are almost dependent on 3D sound, and I can't get that with only one earpiece working. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your balance control is centred, you probably have a broken jack socket. Normally it's a dry or broken solder joint between the socket and the board. These are easy to spot as the sockets are usually through-hole components. Just re-solder the defective joint.

I just looked at the balance settings, and they were centered. I moved them all the way to the left, no change, all the way to the right, no sound whatsoever. So it's a broken solder then?

Sounds like it... A quick look at the board should should reveal whether it is or not.

Yeah; that's where I plug my main speakers in at. Is there a conflict between those or something?

Often using the front jack will disconnect the rear one, but that depends on how the system is configured. For now I guess you could plug the headphones into the rear jack or get a cheap double adapter (two sockets -> one plug) and plug both the headphones and speakers into the rear jack while you fix the front one?

Right, right; when I plug the headphones into the front jack, the sound is routed through them and not the speakers. I've got one of those adapters, I'll post back with the results.
