Repeaters: The not-so-useless human barricade?
« on: June 23, 2007, 05:36:16 am »
I'm thinking since you can build a repeaters in SD, couldn't a fast builder use them as barricades protecting the more vital structures? After all, they do have 60 more HP than a turret. Putting one in front of a door the aliens normally use would stall them for a few, and could be infinitely refreshed.

You can only build them where there is no power.  Therefore, repeaters will never be near the base.

Once a repeater is up, no other repeater can built in its area.  Therefore, no concentration or 'barricade' is possible.

Unless you have 3 people build repeaters at the same time in an unpowered area.

To pave you the true answer, yes they can be used to block tyrants from escaping quickly since they cannot jump over it or go around it in a small hallway/door. But this is only really possible on small to medium games where there isn't an all out alien offense going on.
To use it as a barricade for preventing tyrants from entering it isn't at all useful unless it would slow the tyrant down into a nightmarish ambush crossfire zone, which tbh I would like to have in a map because it would give the humans a reason to come out of their base. What can I say, I like improvised tactics.
Maps where there are hallways/doors where this works are beyond derelict, gloom2beta2, actually any map where this a route that gets you behind the attack tyrant without encountering it.

The unfortunate thing is that they only work in small hallways, due to the fact that only one can be built in a certain radius. That and the fact that they have to be built away from the base, and you can't use one for a barricade in a minibase because you need the power.

I'm not sure about this, but I know you can still build reapeters when the reactor is down, so maybe than you might be able to make a lot?

You can't build one in a powered area, repeaters are powered by reactors, so it's possible, I guess. But if you're wasting your fucking time building repeaters that are just going to blow up and leave only one when the reactor gets up instead of defending or building the reactor, you're fucktarded. >_>

You can't build a repeater when the RC is down. BTW, I dont think the repeater is useless in game. The only reason why they sound useless, it's because nobody use them (or rarely). During an offensive, you can put a repeater near the alien base and all the human team can have fast ammunition income if they use weapons with energy (mdriver, pulse, ...).

If you decon 1 or 2 turret at base, you can even build a medistation near it. It's perfect if you want to keep a close pressure against Alien team, to get many kill and win a game.

You are forgetting to take several things into account.

-Cooldown time, during which you could just as well have been repairing or building.
-You have to find the right spot, which get progressively further from base as you build more repeaters, while the only thing you are carrying is a conkit.
-The further away they are the less of a problem they become for incoming aliens because they can take their sweet time picking it and its builder off.

The repeaters' power as a barricade lies in blocking escape in a narrow route, nothing else.

And even then they're useless. You're likely to go out the same way you went in, and there's probably a que of guys waiting for their turn outside. Think of the top ATCS hallway.

But then there is uncreation with an un-moved reac.  A jetpacking ckit could wait for the tyr to enter and charge at the rets, then build a repeater in the DOORWAY.

While there's a pack of goons crowded around the door waiting for the lone human to run through? Yeah, right.

There's almost always atleast a marauder hanging around there, looking for a kill or two.

Also, a Tyrant running in there at S2 is fucked anyway. Unless it's a 1v1 game, in which it'd be able to destroy the repeater with only a few blaster hits from the constructor.

This whole idea is flawed in so many ways.

Phail, end of story.

Epilogue: Also, reapeters have a 90 second self-distruct timer. If they do not power anything for 90 after being finished built, they will self distruct.

Not a bad window of opportunity. 90 seconds + Build time + Time to explode. About two minutes.
Most fights/ escapes/whatevers last 1-15 seconds. So blocking them for about ten seconds is worth the trouble.

It's not going to be built in 1-15 seconds, so it wont take 10 seconds to take down. More like 1 second, and since it isn't fully built, it will dissapear immediately. That and the fact that it'll be taken out by teammates first. Honestly, you're more likely to be blocked by a friendly tube then a repeater.

Let say, 20 seconds to build, it's fully built, then 90 seconds of life before it self destructs, then one to three seconds to explode, sweet. ~2 minutes. It can take two seconds to destroy but they'll be standing close enough to it that it won't be hard to shoot them while they are doing it. It's like idiots painsawing every tube and 'cade before the eggs.

FULL List of Problems of Repeaters

1. Explodes after a while if its not powering anything
This means you gotta replace it CONSTANTLY

2. Its dangerous to leave base, meaning you have to go further away because all the power will be distributed

3. Free, but waste of time (look above)

4. Aliens kill it really fast
Its health isnt all that high... SADLY meaning that the time that its down, and the time that it takes to explode is only good for blocking as stated b4

5. Large aliens tend to IGNORE them in heated battles
Unless you got some mentally retarded player, normal players wouldnt go out, build a repeater, and feed (die). Then repeat, because the repeater just got owned...

6. Its pretty useless, seeing how unless the human is gaining an advantage, that repeater is just a waste of space

Ah, I wasn't aware of the "Can't be in range of other power structure" rule.

But yeah, I was thinking along the lines of a distraction and small block for tyrants who come in to the base. They don't always have backup, and if the repeater fully builds (10 seconds), it'll block an escaping rant for quite a while, usually enough to kill it.

There are a lot of ifs but if your team handles it well it is a usefull tactic for getting that tyrant that escapes at the last 50/100 hp. But like said to use them constantly as barricades they're bogus and a waste of time.

With a rant I charge in, slash two turrets, and get the hell out of there. There is no 50/100 health about it. Now, with a goon, sometimes I'll make it out of there with 3 health, but that's a different thread.
