i'm not able to start the game from the console.

What distro and what method did you use to install it?
Also check your SDL stuff maybe.

i'm on ubuntu feisty 7.04
i installed via the application menu, not the console.

what is SDL ?

sorry, i'm a newbie...

i checked /dev/nvidia for having write permission, all ok.

Try removing tremulous and installing it from the official installer:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tremulous/tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run?download

chmod +x tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run
sudo ./tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run


When it's done do not play the game when asked or you'll mess up the permissions, exit the installer and then start the game with "tremulous" in a terminal.

thanks ! i tried what you suggested, but i didn't have the choice
whether to start the game or not. the installer simply launched
a black window, then my gdm session freezed (like before, but
this time not fullscreen)

what/where are the correct permissions ? can they be set manually ?

with the same result : (almost) black screen.

do you have any other idea regarding nvidia drivers ?

should i go for the "legacy" drivers ?

You have a GeForce4 MX, I think that legacy is only GeForce and GeForce2, but it's still worth a try.

It sounds like you do need to use the nvidia-glx-legacy package, remove the nvidia-glx package and then install the legacy one.

i finally managed to install nvidia drivers with help
of this thread:

at least i see nvidia splash on X startup

but *still* a blank screen.

after i issued this:

sudo nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite --add-argb-glx-visuals --disable-glx-root-clipping

i get the black terminal window again.

Wait, composite?! I'm not an nVidia user but doesn't that have something to do with using Beryl? If you use Beryl, stop using it and Tremulous will start working.

beryl ? i don't think i have that.

The program 'beryl' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install beryl-core

how can i determine if it's there ?

how do i make sure that it's gone ?

Beryl is 3D desktop (composite window manager). Do you use something like that?

Turn off Desktop Effects.

Do this after you turn it off:

It might be a resolution issue. nvidia-glx supports the GeforceMX 4(much better than the legacy drivers), so that is not the issue.

in the meantime i checked out other OpenGL games like
OpenArena, torcs, etc.. none of them work ..
so maybe the onboard graphics "card" is f**ked up ?

wierd thing is that glxgears is still running fine,..
