XBOX drivers and trem.
« on: July 13, 2007, 12:19:23 pm »
Okies!

FIrstly, i have and xbox 360 controller, devoted for using on the mac, and a nice iBook G4 to go with it. I have been using the xbox drivers for the mac for a while now, i am wondering, can i use these in trem?

The driver is open source, and under gpl, so we can edit if if need be. There IS rumble support, is there anything else i need to say?

Thanks
-Spongy

I think the most pertinent question is why would you want to? You're never going to get the speed an accuracy of view control you need for trem with a gamepad...

He wants to, do we care why? I'm sure he has his reasons, or maybe he doesn't. Maybe he finds Tremulous too easy, so he's looking for ways to deliberately impair his own aiming. Shouldn't stop us from lending a hand.

Spongy: it's almost certainly possible, but the hard part is getting it done. I asked a similar question about the wii remote earlier, you might want to try the search button (or was it on IRC, I forget)

Its called tough love - this way he might learn to play properly rather than spending ours messing around trying to get a controller to work and then finding he is at a massive disadvantage (not to mention upsetting any team he plays with as he inevitably feeds because of it)

playing trem with an xbox controller is pointless because q3 will treat analog inputs as digital ones, you might as well just play using the arrow keys to control orientation.

You ignore the fact that he wants to play with an Xbox controller.
It would be quite a feat to play Tremulous with an Xbox controller using the arrow keys, since the arrow keys are on your keyboard.

using the keyboard and using the xbox controller is the same thing, you can use the joysticks, but only in an on/off manner, there is no fine control over your motion.

I've played Alice (Quake 3 engine, an AWESOME game by American McGee <3 ) with my Nyko airflow gamepad, what you do not want to do is have Quake 3 treat it as a joystick, the first step is to configure your controller to function as a mouse, work all the bugs out of it using it to navigate around the desktop, then get the buttons to function as keys.
If you use the gamepad as a joystick then the movement will be awful and you'll be at more of a disadvantage than you would be playing a game on xbox with the xbox controller.
Code: [Select]
Linux: ~/.tremulous/base/
Mac: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Tremulous/base/

You again ignore the fact that he wants to play with an Xbox controller, and not the arrow keys. So your argument is flawed.

Indeed - digital movements will be pretty crap.
The analouge sticks would, as you say, have to be recogised as mice.

You seem to overlook the fact that an analog stick has a dead point, whereas a mouse has not. This means you will never be able to make an analog stick behave like a mouse.

The analog stick's spring back to it's center position is like lifting a mouse to move it back to the center of the mouse pad, that's how mine works, so no dead point there.

A...oh.
Well, I suppose you could command that when pushed far to the edge, it reaches a 'repeat point', where it carries on just like it would be moving at the fastest possible rate.

But this would take, as far as I see, a shit load of coding.

I did address that point - poor aim = poor player = feeding = bad game for his poor unsuspecting team mates

Sorry to chime in late, but there are tools that let you bind a keystroke to a command. Just set a few up, then bind the keys they control in trem, and presto!
Thats how i did it with a wiimote and 360 controller.

I'm sure that anyone could get better with practice. Doesn't this apply to all noobs? You just need to practice.

coming from you, this is most amusing
I used a gamepad with my old machine and hated the result
as TinMan sez, I hope you plan to spend a lot of time messing around with it
PMing the people who seemed knowledgeable/helpful/friendly is your best bet, Original Poster
and bitching about the community when you are fairly new and trying to do something kinda pointless/personally gratifying/somewhat unnecessary is even more worthless than Bringer's constant Chicken Little impersonation
"Oh, t3h community!"
gamers sarcastic? nah!
but good luck with it...:P

maybe a list of mods would be good

As I have in many a thread in the past, and hope to do in many a thread in the future, may I introduce the Original Poster to the Friendly Moderator, who - I would imagine - would react more than positively to a Personal Message, offering a kind word and a helpful nod. This message is brought to you by people who have used the Internet before.

In other words, OP, PM Para (or anybody else who seemed nice). If you start with an odd request and quickly get an attitude, you need a toehold on the community in terms of personal support (or at least that's been my experience).

Maybe we need to allow mod avatars?

@DASPRiD/Overflow/Timbo/active devs: Is it possible to better identify the moderators' comments in threads? It's easy to see they are mods in the index (who is on?), but not in threads. Or do we not want their private opinions endorsed with any stamp of officiality?

spoilers: a lot of the devs and mods really hate getting pms on the forums.

true, yet Para is kinda hanging around this thread, practically waiting to be asked how he did it :P

anyway, the OP never came back

maybe he figured that it just wouldn't be worth it without his XBOX controller

plus, I've found Paradox to be entirely reasonable when he wasn't painsawing me :D
