Mac performance?
« on: July 15, 2007, 02:08:29 pm »
I went and got the source yesterday as I thought the Altivec optimization was producing code that was causing extra work for the G3 I'm using.

Couple compiler flags later (-O3 -pipe -mcpu=750 -ffast-math -finline -funroll-loops -fexpensive-optimizations) the code produced now uses only about 50% of the available CPU but I still get 8fps when the action gets real heavy.

Can anyone else chime in with their PPC mac performance?

(I'm using a 1Ghz G3 (1mb L2 cache at 1Ghz) Radeon 9200 (128mb) and 1.5Gb of Ram)

I use an almost 2 year old powerbook, and in smaller places I can get way up past 140 fps.  If there is a lot of spam/particles/whatever it can drop to the 20s.  I think it partly depends on what else is open.

Nothing is else is running, and I have tried the lowest settings to the Highest at different resolutions.

The framerate stays pretty much the same.

But even when things get heavy on the screen like when theres 20 people on ACTS all smushed into one corner the frame rate drops to a low avg of 18fps.

But the CPU usage does not go up.

When it drops from the 80's to 20 and back up again it makes it real awkward playing so I cap it at 35fps so its playable.

Could it be some kind of deadlock or something waiting?

there are quite a few people on this forum who would be offended that you lumped akka in with the likes of sst.

I set com_maxfps to 200 now and I get a avg framerate of something in the 140-150 range and when it gets a bit heavy it drops to something in the 20s.

So better than the 8fps previously.

Still its a bit wierd.
