Servers, location, policy
« on: April 23, 2006, 10:27:31 am »
We all know the location of a server drastically affects things like lag. In addition the admin policy often distinguishes between heaven and hell for griefers.

So, I would like to ask for info on the public servers. Where about is it located? What's the moderation policy (admin in #trem-admins, voting allowed, extra moderation systems)?

The list:

Name: Beer Garden
Location: Dallas, Texas, USA
Moderation policy: Trembot installed, active and creative admins.

Name: #db@ Central Hive
Location: Nuernberg, Germany
Moderation policy: Trembot not installed, many active admins.

Name: #db@ Proximus
Location: Nuernberg, Germany
Moderation policy: Trembot not installed, many active admins.

Name: #db@ Omega Prime
Location: Nuernberg, Germany
Moderation policy: Trembot not installed, many active admins.

Beer Garden is located @ theplanet.com datacenter in dallas, tx.. we got the trembot system installed and will be updating what 'anonymous' users can do shortly...

Other than that.. dont be a butthead or I'll kick you.. [EVIL]Unknown will probably make you feel like a loser for awhile then kick and ban you...

And for gods sake dont call kick votes for no reason.. what is up with that.. is that the new thing just to call a vote to kick the highest scoring person on the other team?!?!?!

Bleh..

Trembot currently not installed, did not take a closer look yet. All db.tremulous-members have rcon, griefers are first kicked / banned if griefing again.

Hi!

I just wanted to log in to "db@ Proximus" server. After  the Awaiting for challange message the server told me, that there is already a user using my nick "KoS".
I got a big angry because of this and change my nick to "KoS-TheReal" on another server and tried again. It told me that this nick is also used!
After checing the server info, I realized that both KoS and KoS-TheReal are there with 999 ping, so I tought that it might be a server or client problem.
I wanted to send a mail to the server administrator about this, but as I don't know whom to write, I tought that maybe someone can help me in this topic.
I hope I will not be banned next time automatically because of this....

You likely have a poor net connection, the server sees you connect Ok and registers you on the server, but you have some packetloss such that your client then doesn't see the message from the server saying that you are now connected, so it continues to try to connect and won't get anywhere since you're technically already connected.

Thanks for your response.
You might be right, but I was still able to connect to other db@ ... servers without any problem, and didn't face this problem until now (playing the game more than a month).
I have a descent connection (around 700 kb/s) although it is not too much nowdays.
It still might have been a connection problem anyway...

or its just that he had an irregular disconnection, as you get with any ping timeout. The server thinks you're still playing but replies take too long to come, the 999 ping, and after a set amount of time it should disconnect you. This depends on server settings and stuff, usually its 30s but can last as long as 1m or more on the odd freak circumstance.

All Servers are running Tremulous 1.1.0 build14 with R1Admin, Admins active on all servers (me especially on Omega Prime, Derelict and Centauri Minor). FF is off on all servers, griefers will be kicked/annoyed/banned if admins are present.

One last thing: Derelict is open as a testing platform for other mapdesigners as well! If you have a map ready for a public playtest, just drop me a line and a download-link and I will get your pk3 cycled!
Just take care to submit maps that do not have major bugs (except players ;)) in them, please alpha test them at home first!

Cheers, Danny

I cant connect to any of the db servers, seeing as they are only low ping.

Here is another server to add to the list:
tremulous.tjw.org
14 free, 2 private
Trembot installed, several active admins, including HighTech, myself, and Tjw

Where is tjw located?  I consistently get the best ping on that server, and I'm in the bay area.

Yes, i love the tjw server, doesnt have excessessive amounts of slots (depending on my mood), and has higher build limits, making base building easier.

I can never connect to the DB servers either.  I always get a "low ping only" error, which is odd considering I'm using high-speed cable, unless your server doesnt accept people who are over-seas, have semi-low end PC's, or are not on T1 connections

It's impossible to get low ping with regular consumer internet connection overseas. #db is in germany, therefor, anyone except europeans shouldn't use it. USA got its own servers anyways.
