Tyrant Time: Overpowered or Over-feared?
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:18:43 pm »
At the moment, the appearance of tyrants often ends games.  Obviously they're powerful and so they should be (though whether that power ought to be moderated a little is a moot point).

However, just the sight of them seems to send some / many human players a little crazy ("OMG Tyrants") and some will get really 'disconnecty'.  Obviously there is bad base design, poor teamwork etc but there are a few things that humie soldiers could do to make things easier for themselves (hence the reason for this thread).

Some obvious things from a relative noob:

i) Don't stand there and shoot at an incoming tyrant unless you are absolutely 100% sure that it's near dead.  It's a bad thing to do with any alien, no matter a tyrant.  Typing \kill in the console would be slower. Sorry.

ii) Similarly, don't just walk back and fire at an incoming tyrant - better than standing and will work for some aliens but it'll perhaps give you..err..1-2 seconds more with a tyrant.  They can only hit you from the front, so feint and move left-right whilst turning to face him, like you do on any other FPS

iii)  There are times for light armour / helmet combos (such as the 'great egg hunt' ) and there are times for 'suits.  If you haven't got a suit on, then keep distance whilst facing the naughty tyrant and shoot with long-range weapons.

iv) Chasing - I know running after a tyrant is a bit dodgy, but IMO, if you can tell that it's badly wounded then for the team it seems a worthwhile activity and also moves the fight away from the middle of the base.  If you die killing a tyrant then thats 1 kill to the aliens to 5 evolve points lost.  Oh and the sprint button is there for a reason!

More tips and comments please! :)

I think the real reason why people fear Tyrants is because a lot of games end up like that :
- Humans beeing the little base campers they so love to do have been at stage 3 for so long yet their battle suits users still fear going out because of the Dretches.
- After some looong time, aliens reach stage 3 and then, the game was in that stalemate situation for so long that 90% of the alien players have 9 Evo points in store. See what happens when a base gets attacked by 8 Tyrants ( one alien player got the brilliant idea to evolve to Adv Dragoon just in case ) at the same time :)
urphy's rules of combat
8 ) Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at.
18 ) Make it too tough for the enemy to get in and you can't get out.

Tyrants are just feared. Sure, its quite hard to handle them by yourself, but humans aren't meant to be loners. Teamwork is the key. As for battlesuits, when you're heading out to attack a base you shouldn't even bother wasting ammo on a dretch unless he's blocking you (or you've got a saw). Blaster is a good dretch killer with infinite ammo :D

Tyrants are over-feared.

I'm often successful  without any armor.
The MOST times i kill them is as soon as they signal they don't have health left and run away.(Of course you have to know that they run away because they don't have health left and not to make a trap)

I then forget everything and follow the tyrant. I do not release the fire-button until the tyrant is dead :D

It seems many players don't think that a tyrant "costs" a lot and just ignore it when an almost dead tyrant runs away.

Their over feared. A grenade and quick blast from a rifle will kill one quickly.

I agree. The biggest problem is that humans let the tyrants flee instead of blocking their way or following them. When I asked them online why they don't follow they said that they fear another tyrant

When one comes in a base, have a human go out to the probable flee path with a lcannon or prifle. Grenades help too. As the tyrant flees, it runs into a prifle, lcannon, or a grenade. Dead tyrants...

Most games I saw there wasn't just one tyrant in the base

I dont even like to use Tyrants, mostly because of lag, the game never picks up my trample attack.  I always just "push" the human when i trample (no damage), and i only ever actually killed someone once.

Plus, doesnt it take like 2-3 tramples to kill a battlesuit anyways, espeically against a lucifer cannon?

Tyrant resistance is the main reason behind choosing a particular base spot. Tyrants hate bottlenecks. If you build the base in a bottleneck, you can stalemate forever. They're good for pinning humans down, but not so good against properly camped human base in a bottleneck.
In my experience, a base which can be razed with tyrants, can also be razed with marauders/dragoons. If it can't be destroyed with marauders/dragoons, it also can't be destroyed with tyrants.
f you have a demo of ass-kicking basilisk playing against experienced opponents, ESPECIALLY in later stages, send it to me.

However some bases that can't be destroyed by tyrants can be destroyed by mauraders and dragoons.

Unfortunately people tend to concentrate a bit too much on tyrants. If the enemy is s3 and walking around with luci cannons and the likes it can be much more effective to jump into their base with mauraders and just hop around (or with advanced mauraders hop around and shoot lightning). Many humans just don't look at where they shoot :)). Add a few advanced dragoons to the mix if possible to take out tesla's in advance to make entry easier.

I think lack of teamwork is the main problem ... and of course, fear of tyrants certainly doesn't help teamwork ... usually when tyrants come I see people running like mad, scared rabbits. It's kinda difficult to kill a tyrant alone as a human ... it can be done, but it's not easy, especially since tyrants are very fast and powerful ... while a lucifer cannon may be powerful, it is not fast, and neither are humans. A well coordinated team of Bsuiters with lucifer cannons or at least pulse rifles can easily take down a herd of tyants. I would recommend concentrating fire on one tyant until it's dead, then move to the next. Tyrants are not fearless either ... I've seen lots of tyrants run away as soon as one of them dies

Also, tyrants can be evaded surprising easily ... just move in a circle. And humans should not stay close together, that intices a tyrant to rush and slaughter most of the team. I dunno about you, but when I'm a tyant and I see a group of humans I'll probably rush them as long as not too many of them are wearing Bsuits ... and I get lots a kills in return.

I have never seen a game where the Humans won after the Aliens got S3.  Earlier today, I was in a game where the Humies survived for a good 10 minutes with teamwork, but in my opinion, Tyrants are way to ****ing overpowered.
ot changing this sig until I get Spore
