I doubt anyone actually knows who this is, but I'll explain it breifly anyways.

[ill]will back in 2004 sold 2 copies of the Microscotch sourcecode for $40. He was sentanced on a 50K bail which he was bailed out on. He was later thrown into prison in 2006 for 2 years. More on the story is available at:

http://www.freeillwill.com/OLD/case.html

I thought it was pretty funny how someone hacked into microsoft and stole their sourcecode for Windows2000, well Im off to find it.

You can support [ill]will by telling everyone about it, and putting this in your sig:

He got off lightly. Whatever the motive, there are better ways of making a point than that.

IMHO what happened to him kinda sucks. I also believe that Microsoft deserves what happened to him. It is kinda weird though how the guy who actually hacked to get the source code still hasn't been caught.

Yes he does need an iMac [I dont understand why he cant just run linux :P]

Why does Microsoft deserve it?Because you use Linux? And because Windows is more popular and isn't free?

Man, I saw the topic title and thought it would be an interesting philosophical discussion about determinism and civil liberties versus personal security (i.e. the consequences of allowing people to treat or mistreat others as they will).
Instead I got a story about some tit that stole from an unpopular software company for personal gain and is therefore hailed as a hero.

>:(

Puma: if I wanted to get myself a copy of windows it would involve the transfer of money form me to other people. Thus, not free.

I knew Will.
He was a pretty decent guy, and always gave great coding advice.
I used to idle on LocalIRC, specifically #int3 and #localchat, and I'd see him there.
I never got to know him personally, but Rick, aaerox, and catid seemed to.

Well that's what happens if one tries to rip off some idiots. Somtimes it just backfires.
He should have never sold what he did not own, but he got greedy.
So now he has a problem, and rightly so.
Let those warez-peddler rot where they belong, in jail.

Interesting analysis of the source here :

http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/2/15/71552/7795

Why would anyone want the source ? Who knows. Curiosity maybe.

Doesn't matter to me anyway, I'm used to having source for everything being a Linux user and open source programmer.

Also, he gets what he deserves. If you don't want to go to jail, don't steal intellectual property from the biggest software company in the world.
