Installing the client, backport & latest patches
« on: August 14, 2007, 03:24:24 pm »
Hello to all.

I have a quick suggestion.

I'd like to see a sticky in this sub-forum listing the following things:

1) links to the various clients for each OS (including Mac), with the version number of the latest revision/iteration/update shown

2) a link to the backport site, with a discussion of how to properly install the game and the backport for each OS (Windows, Linux, Mac), including the revision/iteration/update/version number of the backport, and a brief discussion (in layman's terms) of who wrote it, and what it does

3) a link to the latest comprehensive patch(es) for each OS, and a brief discussion of how to install it over the game and backport, (including unpacking it, and directory names), as well as a brief discussion of what the patch does and who wrote it

4) a link to a small pack of beta maps "generally accepted" by the "community-at-large"

While I appreciate the many Tremulous file-hosting sites, there seem to be many sites that have not been recently updated, while others are so crammed with files that they are almost overwhelming.

I think players who get a different computer or decide to reinstall so they can get a server-unique GUID or who upgrade or change their OS could use a one-stop-shopping kind of site/thread/sticky/blog to update to the latest proper version of the client, backport, patch, and map pack, so they can get back to playing (not searching for files of dubious provenance).

One player's opinion (also PlayerOne's opinion). Since I am reinstalling the Mac client yet again (want clean install, not buggy patches; need server-unique GUID), I will post the proper procedure for Intel-based Mac client here "soon".

If anyone has anything useful to add, feel free to post here, please. The manual and FAQ are somewhat vague about installing the client, and players who ask about installing the backport get flamed for being stupid, then tossed from servers for not having one. Elitist, much?

"C'MON!" @ Trem "community"
Where's the <3?

Thanks in advance for any helpful posts. I figured it out for both Mac and Windows, although I'd say the easiest way to patch the client I've seen so far (especially for Mac) is to connect to the right server. More about that in a later post. Have a lovely Tremulous day.

P.S. The sticky should be updated on the first of every month, with the latest client, backport, patch(es), and current small list of recent beta maps (gabtcal). I know that the information and the files are out there in Tremland. I also realize that most of this info is scattered over this site or can be found at the }MG{ site. I still think it would be useful for the entire community if there was a consolidated, concise reference to installing Tremulous right here, right now. One friendly sticky, in a sea of flaming spam.

P.P.S. Internet cookie to the first person who beats me to a discussion of properly installing the client, the backport, the latest patch(es) and at least one beta map (in layman's terms, with links to files, and a discussion of files/folders/directories, as well as a guide to unpacking any files) for any one OS: Windows, Linux, or Mac. Heck, two cookies if you post the Mac version first. <3.

Correspondent: Thanked!

Note: the finished product has to have the latest patch (no cookie if not sort-by-ping). Proof-of-concept thumbs which point to tutorials/blogs/big_images/etc. get extra credit. No cookies for breaking layout of page.

I guess I should've named this thread "Installing Challenge!" to get more results, huh? Nobody interested in writing tutorials for noobs today? Alright, I need to reinstall, |Z|R|Comp recommended a cool patch and I should probably post the path to true MacTrem happiness herein. Cya soon w/results. L8rz.

1) Links to the Mac client:

Apple's page (indirect link) Note: although this link supposedly points to the 20060625.dmg build, what is actually downloaded is the 20060704.dmg build. FYI.

FAQ (indirect link) Note: when OS is not found under Files, proceed to FAQ. There is a nice link, about halfway down the page, that points directly to tjw's site & 20060704.dmg.

tjw's trem page (indirect link) Note: Devlog. The Mac build link is after the graph. Both this page and the thread linked to on the trem.net FAQ should be perused thoroughly.
