I am not trying to insult him, I am merely trying to point out that the Tremulous default hud looks quite professional, while this redone hud looks like plain crap. Since he just started his work I am sure it will improve over time, but right now it's just plain ugly. Keep working on it though!
The difference between my HUD and the 'default' Tremulous HUD is that the Tremulous HUD is worried more about theme than visibility. I'm worried more about stark visibility than theme, but am attempting to maintain some level of theme still.
This rebuild started with the human HUD because I use the Construction Kit so often on humans, and got sick and tired of not being able to see how many build points I had left because the CKit's "screen" was so bright it washed out the build counter. That the Aliens had numerous obscuring pieces like the Wallclimb and Boost indicators that I found quite intrusive led me to apply a heavy hand to removing elements I had no use for from that HUD as well.
And stating that something looks 'like crap' or 'unprofessional' without explaining what you mean by those highly personal terms means I cannot improve, or even verify if your conclusions are valid. You're making an emotional argument, not a factual argument at that point. So I ask again,
what parts do you think look like crap, and why?Well, thinking about that, the booster info is fine where it is. The info is very simple : you have it or not and so it is basic enouth that you can put it on the sides without problems. On the other hand, maybe there's still some place near the crosshair like the dragoon bard counter so maybe there's something you can do there.
I could place it there, but it would always be visible. I ONLY get to toggle the transparency for the Wallwalk and Boosted markers between 50% and 100%, I can't completely remove the Wallwalk or Boosted indicators from the screen. I'm heavilly abusing layered and re-coloured graphics to create the dark-orange/highlighter-yellow colour transition on the Boost indicator currently.
For the wallwalk mode on, maybe something like triangles on the bottom of the screen when it's on. Anything visible and "easy" to understand. One big problem with the current system is that it's difficult to see if wallwalk is on and it's even harder when you combine that with booster info. Your's is a good idea but the texture choice isn't for my taste
There's another limitation of Tremulous. I'll experiment further with other graphical elements inside Tremulous and see if I can find something more usable for the Wallclimb indicator as well.
And last, the build counter for aliens could be placed near the crosshair too.
Actually, I'm (ab)using the Build Counter to create a crosshair for Aliens. I hadn't thought to place an existing and proper crosshair and underlaying the Build Counter below the crosshairs though, that's a good idea. Or should I place it 'over' the crosshairs like the Barb Counter?
The Build Timers unfortunately can ONLY be the 'circular eight wedges' design due to the Tremulous code itself, however. So finding a place to put that where it won't cause problems is something I'm still struggling with for Aliens. For Humans, I cheated and layed an opaque black circle inside the build timer to 'fake' the circular outline build timer effect visible on my rebuild human HUD.
I like the default HUD more too.
Since I ask everyone else this quite publicly... please explain how you like the default HUD better? I'd
dearly love to make this an over-all improvement on the default HUD for the majority of players, so I heartilly welcome input from others.
