Thanks doomagent! that worked...slowly. it showed me where the base folder was, so I downloaded the rest of the maps manually. thanks for the help all!
so, for any n00bs like myself who are tired of getting kicked off of servers when they move to nonstandard maps, here are the instructions for making downloaded maps work.
You can use doomagent's method, but it takes FOREVER. I'm serious. the map changed to ATCSZALPHA, and it started an automatic download, but by the time the map downloaded the game had already reached sudden death. so while that method will work, it is...less than optimal. You're better off doing a manual download.
you can download maps manually 1 of 2 ways. You can spend 20 minutes downloading "the beer Garden Map Pack"
http://www.beer-garden.org/bg2/modules/wfdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=5&lid=102 which has most of the popular nonstandard maps, and should take you about 15 minutes to download on a DSL connection. or....
you can download ALL of the nonstandard maps. here;
http://trem-maps.beer-garden.org/just search for "PK3" in the search box, and it will display all 191 nonstandard maps. So if you're planning on downloading all of them, make sure you've got plenty of time on your hands. this will take at LEAST an hour and a half.
anyhow, in windows, you'll want to download to;
My Computer ~ Program Files ~ Tremulous ~ Base
in Ubuntu, open the "Home Folder" and press "Ctrl H" to show the hidden files. scroll down and look for the ".Tremulous" folder. Click on it, and go to the base folder.
If you download the beer garden map pack, the beer garden map pack is a bunch of .zip files inside a another .zip file. what I did was I downloaded it to my desktop, and I unzipped the file there. only unzip the main zip file. once you do that you should have 20 map files that are still zipped. leave all the maps zipped, and drag and drop them as is into the Base Folder, and you're ready to go!
If you don't have time to download all of the maps, and have a "favorite" server, or the beer garden pack doesn't have all the maps that your favorite server uses, I would suggest joining your server, picking a team, hitting "esc" selecting "Vote" clicking on "call Vote" and then select the "map" button. and you will see a listing of ALL the maps that server uses. write them all down, and then go download the ones you don't have manually. still not short, but it won't take nearly as long as downloading every single map.
If you're planning on downloading ALL the maps individually, I would suggest changing the folder you download to, instead of downloading to desktop, download directly to the base folder. it saves a step.
hopefully this was helpful.
