Ubuntu Issue...
« on: October 06, 2007, 11:07:00 pm »
Hi, I'm a new Ubuntu user, so please be kind...

I installed Tremulous through the synaptic package manager (got both tremulous 1.1.0-3 and tremulous-data 1.1.0-2) and the installation went pretty seamlessly. The icon appears as it should in applications>games, but when I go to launch it I go straight to my boot screen then to my Ubuntu login screen. This is the first gaming I've tried yet as I've been mostly focused on getting Ubuntu setup to do what i need it to do. Is this an issue with my video card not being setup correctly? Any ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Yup, I actually figured it out about 5 minutes after I originally posted. Game functions perfectly now, looks pretty sweet.  :D

It could be that I am a real newb. I do believe that I am. I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. While playing for about five mins, the screen shrinks, and i can't move. I can still see people playing, but I am unable to move or do anything. I can't even see my mouse cursor outside of the game. I always have to hit the Esc and exit the game. What could the problem be?

Spoonf, if it is a fresh install you are so horribly wrong in your statement. Check for the content in /etc/init.d/ or /etc/rc.d/ and rethink it.

While you are on it, disable compiz.

Additionally DON'T install tremulous through synaptic, you can't update the tremulous client.

Make sure Pidgin(Gaim) or any program that gives you notifications is not running. This might even include the updates manager. If you have compiz running do Alt-F2 and type "metacity --replace" (or disable 3D Desktop Effects).

The debian package in the Ubuntu repository makes it difficult to modify the game files to your liking(like installing a backport client, for instance), since it is based on Debian package management.

A similar game with this issue is Battle for Wesnoth. You can only play online with their installer because the package in the repository is almost always out of date.

Debian package management is great but it doesn't work well with games that need to be updated regularly in order to play online.

same as always :)
install the drivers to your gfx-card. As oposed to windows linux will use software rendering if the drivers are not installed.
