And what do I need to start a server on Linux?
I have looked on the forums but they seem to be instructions for windows.

YEAAAARGH! BUGS! MORE BUGGY SERVERS! NOOOOOOOO!

If you don't know how, you're not supposed to do it in the first place. Thank you for saving devs' coding time by not trying to.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!
1.2.0 release's been delayed for 5:48:00 already because of stupid questions.

You're kidding me right?

He is God the (essential nature) , the unique inifinite personal spirit holy, rightious, wise, and loving, who has created the existing universe, and who is preparing souls for eternal fellowship with himself through their own free response to the error on mental challenges and opporunities which he appoints.

No screw you.
You come here begging for help while pretending you had a look at the forum, yet you fail epicaly.
All you ask has been explained ad nauseum, including the errors you encountered.

But since you had a look at the forum and you certainly did find the posts pertaining to this, it leaves us only one possibility...

You are a under the age of reading, thus you do not belong on the internet, not to speak of this forum.

To be fair, that legal mumbo-jumbo involved in suing the search button can get really complicated, from what I hear.  I imagine it's pretty expensive, too. :(

I'm one of those guys who have to read through bugreports and mark dozens of them duplicate just because some clueless noob has set up his own horribly outdated stock server and players who visit it keep finding bugs which have been fixed months ago.

Note to self: Nag Timbo to finally make a bugfix release of 1.1.0...

You seem to be missing more than that.
You have no clue about the OS you are using, so get your ass back to windows and stop buggering us about a Linux-tremserver.

Come back when you have at lease a fundamental grasp.

Oookay....

Let's see if we can bring this thread back to some semblance of being on topic.  As much as you all know that I love newbie-bashing, I guess I'll try to figure out what the hell is going on.

Maseo, you need to answer some questions and provide some details before we can help you:  What flavor of Linux do you use?  What did you use to install Tremulous?  How much experience do you have with Linux?

Now, if you had read the "how to make a server in Windows" thread, you would have found this section down at the bottom:
Quote
Please, when you ask a question, follow these simple guidelines:
  • Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  Make complete sentences.  Don't use ALL CAPS, l33t speak, etc.
  • Ask specific questions, not open-ended questions.  "I'm trying to start a server, can someone help me?" is not a good question.
  • Provide as much information as possible.  If you get an error, provide error messages, or a copy of the log.  If you don't know what to do next, provide a list of what you've done so far.
Following these simple steps will help us help you, and it will make it much more likely that someone will WANT to help you.

For a longer (and slightly condescending) guide on how to ask questions on the Internet, you can read "How to Ask Questions the Smart Way".

Okay.  Now you've read that, right?  So do it, post something USEFUL here and we'll try to help you.

However, because I'm just that good and I like showing off, I'm going to make a stab at helping you solve your problem without knowing anything about it.  First, the Guide to Setting up a Windows server can still help you although some of it does not apply.  For example, you need a .sh shell script instead of a .bat batchfile.

For Linux installations, the default directories are:
  • <User> = ~/.tremulous/
  • <Main> = /usr/local/games/tremulous/
Finally, you will want to download and use these two files:Both of those files can be found at tjw's website, which you have probably heard about if you've read the forums at all.

If you want to run your own server on Linux, you should read and learn a little bit about:[list=1]
  • The Linux directory structure
  • Linux "dot" files (user configuration files)
  • Linux shell scripts[/list:o]If you type any of those subject lines into Google, you'll get several good websites explaining them to you.

It's probably not necessary to quote my entire post.  ;)

First of all, hopefully you're the owner of your computer.  If you're not, you shouldn't try to mess around with the inner workings.

If you ARE the owner, then here's what you need to know: Linux, by default, protects operating system files so that they can't be messed up.  Anything you can't change easily is something that you shouldn't change without knowing exactly what you're doing.  Before you make any changes, be sure you've done your research, made backups, etc.

Now, having said that, if you only change stuff in /usr/local/games/tremulous, you're unlikely to mess up your computer in any serious way.

To change protected parts of the file system, you need to use the sudo command.  This is used on the command line as a prefix to a normal command.  If you use sudo, the computer will prompt you for your password.  Entering your password will cause the command to be run with root privileges.

For example, say I have my new server.cfg on the desktop and I want to copy it to /usr/local/games/tremulous/base.  It might go something like this.:
Quote
~$ cd /usr/local/games/tremulous/base

/usr/local/games/tremulous/base$ cp ~/Desktop/server.cfg .
cp: cannot create regular file `./server.cfg': Permission denied

/usr/local/games/tremulous/base$ sudo cp ~/Desktop/server.cfg .
Password:

/usr/local/games/tremulous/base$ ls -l server.cfg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5292 2007-10-15 14:25 server.cfg

/usr/local/games/tremulous/base$

Sudo is VERY POWERFUL and DANGEROUS.  The general rule of thumb is, only use sudo when you absolutely need to.  That way, it's harder to accidentally mess something up.
